Is Your Child Safe at Home?

29
No I do not mean in the kitchen or bathroom, although you should make sure they realise the possible dangers in those rooms, I am thinking of the Internet and the very real dangers that can enter your home through the computer screen.
This is a very real problem for almost all parents.
The Internet is really popular with all kids and they have now grown up with the web as a part of normal reality.
Most children can now easily use a computer and talk to their friends and swap texts and pictures by email and in chat rooms.
Regrettably so can predators.
I have to tell you that.
there are now thousands or people trying to contact children worldwide with not very nice intentions.
According to newspaper sources many of these pedophiles are in quite respectable jobs by day but have themselves become part of an international group swapping pictures with each other of children and teenagers According to Law Enforcement officials this is a growing problem and it is widespread.
Even Judges, Clergy and Youth leaders are involved - both men and women.
You obviously want to protect your own children from these predators and there are resources to help you.
One of these is a program called Net Nanny which will automatically censor sites with a poor reputation.
So how can you protect your children? Education is of course the best way, plus making quite sure your children can only use their computer in the family living room where you can keep an eagle eye out for them.
You can also ensure then that your children are not being bullied.
Never allow your child to have a computer in their room and remember that some games machines also have internet connections now.
It is very difficult to say which site should be banned.
Most video sharing sites often have dubious material and you should watch for your self what your children are viewing on sites like YouTube.
Gambling sites sometimes try to lure children with innocuous games and you should watch out for these.
Social websites like Bebo, Facebook and MySpace often ask for personal details and you should be careful about what your children write about themselves - these sites are also used by criminals trying to commit identity theft.
Pedophiles often pretend to be children themselves and to swap photos, stories or even gifts to gain the trust of a child.
Ensure you know the log-in details of your children to sites and beware of children being secretive with this kind of information.
Watch out for your child deleting the history part of their browser - it is a bad sign and one often suggested by predators to cover their tracks..
Pedophiles usually try to obtain photos of children so please make sure your child understands why they should not send any pictures to someone they do not know.
