How to Deal With Swearing Toddlers
- 1). Watch your own mouth, especially around your toddler. Toddlers mimic the adults around them and if you frequently use swear words, whether in daily conversation or the occasional cuss after stubbing your toe, your little one will use the same words that she hears you using.
- 2). Keep a straight face. You may be angry that your child has used a swear word or you may find it funny to hear such a word come out of his little mouth, but the more you react to it, whether you're reacting positively or negatively, the more reinforcement he has to use it. If he gets no response, he may stop using the word on his own.
- 3). State that it's not a word that she should use. You don't need to give a long lecture about it -- simply say, "That's not a word we use in this family."
- 4). Set a limit that works for you. Short time-outs can work well with toddlers, but you may want to give a warning before doing that. You may also find that your toddler responds better to having privileges taken away.
