Potty Training - Why Are You Letting it Stress You Out?

25
Do you remember when you potty trained? Probably not.
Well, and I hope I can speak for you, using the bathroom is just another regular daily routine.
Whatever stress you might have had when you potty trained is long forgotten.
The good news is that training your toddler to use the potty can be a positive experience - it just depends on your approach.
At the very least, doing away with stinky diapers should be a major incentive to potty train your toddler correctly the first time.
Many parents end up taking longer to get their toddler trained because of a negative atmosphere surrounding the whole event.
Making it a fun time for both child and parent will not only mean less stress, but it will likely lead to quicker potty training.
When you choose the time to start, you need to jump in with both feet.
Diapers are no longer an option.
You probably want to keep some pullups handy for night time and nap time.
Accidents are going to happen, but that is all part of training.
If you go back to diapers you are going to confuse your child and this is going to extend the time it takes to get them successfully trained.
Regarding those accidents that are going to happen.
Do not dwell on these too much with your child.
Tell them they will do better next time.
A good way to avoid accidents is to ask them at regular intervals throughout the day if they need to go.
In my own experience, they probably will say no.
However, if you don't give them an option they will go.
For example, they cannot watch the tv until they go potty.
Bring the whole family on board during potty training.
If everyone is checking in with your toddler, they will be more accountable.
Praise during this time is huge.
Celebrate success with them - actually over-do it! You will be amazed how excited they get when they are successful.
If you choose, rewards can be in place when they make successful trips to the bathroom - but only completely successful trips.
They need to understand that.
My daughter would jump for joy when she did her business, and I found that stickers were a great reward for her.
Taking the time to properly potty train your toddler is imperative.
Hit and miss will not be sufficient.
By getting it all right the first time, you are going to save yourself a lot of stress and effort.
