Forget the Machines, Train Like an Athlete!

All too many times I get asked about what the best way to train involves.
This is something that doesn't take me long to answer with people because essentially I train myself and my clients the same way.
You see as a personal trainer and strength and conditioning professional that has worked in Atlanta, Georgia now for over 10 years I have found that everyone should train like an athlete.
This is interesting to me though because I have seen a growing trend among people that disturbs when they go to workout.
Workout Like An Athlete So what do I see that disturbs me? Well, the fact is that for some reason everyone gets enamored with the shiny machines and sea of cardio equipment that the health clubs offer.
This is a ridiculous purchase that people pay for with their health club memberships.
Now you are probably thinking, Brandon what do you mean, of course this is what they pay for? Well, last time I checked the generic term was "health club," yet I don't see too many people making very much progress in their "health.
" Now I'm not blaming the gyms, but I am blaming the customer.
You see the trend that really disturbs me is the tremendous urge people feel to want to mimic some diagram on a machine that involves moving a fixed lever in one direction while they talk on the cell phone to their boyfriend or girlfriend.
Then they wonder why they can't "lose the gut" after being a member of the club for over a year.
If you are wondering about how to train your body effectively you have got to approach it with some grit and some fight! This is why I approach training myself and my clients like an athlete.
I train both athletes and non-athletes, but they are all getting the benefit of being fit! You see when approaching a strength and fitness program you have got to significantly raise your level of perceived exertion and break a sweat in a hurry if you expect to get any REAL results from your training.
This is why you should engage in movements that require you to think, balance, and control your body during the process.
You see the shiny sparkly machine has taken this away from the way we are meant to move and train.
Not only has the dust collector evoked physical laziness, but it has also promoted mental laziness as well! If you want to get the results then you need to step up the intensity.
