How to Keep a Baby From Waking Up

    • 1). Put your baby to sleep close to where he will eventually end up. If you rock your baby to sleep in your bedroom and will eventually put him in the crib in his nursery, he will probably wake up because of the distance you have to walk and the change in movement. It’s a better idea to have a rocking chair or glider in the nursery so that you will not have that far to walk. Even the minor jolts when you make each step can wake your baby.

    • 2). Move slowly. Even when moving your baby from your arms to the crib or bed, it is easy to wake her up because she detects a change in movement. Make slow and fluid movements so that it is more difficult for your baby to be affected by maybe the change in wind to her face when you’re walking or the change in temperature when you move her away from your body.

    • 3). Be aware of the lighting. When there is a sudden change in lighting such as, light to dark or dark to light, your baby’s eye sensitivity, will wake them. Just think, when you’re sleeping and someone comes in and turns on a light after it is pitch dark for a while, you wake up too. Try using a night light to guide you through your baby’s room during the night hours or having a separate lamp with a very low wattage light bulb for those 3:00 a.m. diaper changes. Another great way to create lighting for a dark room is to leave the television on during the night.

    • 4). Be aware of sudden changes in movement, especially when getting up out of a rocking chair or glider with your baby. It takes a lot of energy to get up out of a chair with your weight and your baby’s weight. This is one of the number one ways to wake your baby up and not be able to put him back to sleep.

    • 5). Avoid making your baby’s surroundings too quiet when she is sleeping. Don’t tell people to “shhh” and don’t try to muffle the dog barking outside. This will ensure that your baby can sleep through noisy nights and helps when your baby stays the night at an unfamiliar house, like a relative’s place.

    • 6). Avoid putting your baby to sleep with the same noises and motions every night. Don’t rock your baby to sleep all the time or play the same song. Your baby will get used to this and when he is not in an environment that provides these things, he may sleep restlessly and wake up often.
