How to Handle a Defiant Child - Ages 3 to 6
A child who is nothing but defiant can make you feel as if you've given birth to the devil incarnate.
So how do you handle a child who is rude to adults, throws constant temper tantrums? Well with a younger child between the ages of 3 to 6 you can hopefully change around the behavior.
First off you must make sure you are clear about your rules and follow through on consequences.
Many parents when they give a consequence to a child decide they will not follow through for the entire time necessary.
Say your youngster, whose age 4 has decided to throw a fit in the middle of a store.
You tell that child that crying and throw yourself on the floor will not get you candy.
If you walk with me and help me pick out things (without whining, or tantruming) you may pick one candy at the end.
Only give them three chances to earn the candy.
If they are unable to hold it together for that trip, they can always try again the next time.
Just make sure that if they do act up after given three chances that the child is not allowed to get the candy.
To often children manipulate and bully his or her parents to get the child's way.
Don't allow this to happen.

Remember this suggestion may not help for the next 3 trips to the grocery store.
However, when you stick it, it will begin to take an effect on the child's behavior and they will start to comply in the future.
Don't balk at the idea of taking a child into see a qualified mental health professional, there may well be a reason that only the specialist will be able to figure out for your child's behavior.
With you keeping to consequences, and a therapist helping your child with their behavior you should see some advancement.
