Tips on Tying Floral Bows

46

    Ribbon

    • Two inch wide ribbon is perfect for a medium to large sized bow. If your ribbon is too thin, it can get lost in the floral arrangement. If the ribbon is much larger than two inches, it will be unwieldy to work with. Ribbon can be purchased with wire along the edges; this works well in keeping the shape, although it is not necessary. You will need at least a yard for a good sized floral bow; having more than a yard or ribbon on hand often comes in handy, however.

    Number of Loops

    • The more loops you create, the larger the bow will be when finished. A small bouquet of flowers may only need four or five loops. If making a large centerpiece or putting the bow on a floral wreath, you may want a larger bow. Make loops until you feel the bow is large enough; this may require 15 or 16 loops. Don't worry if you feel you have made too many; simply take a few loops out.

    Holding the Bow

    • Secure the middle of the bow with floral wire. This is one of the most secure ways of holding the bow together. You can also thread a needle prior to making the bow and take a few stitches through the center of the bow. This is a more permanent method, but it takes a minute or two longer to ensure it is secure enough. Pipe cleaners, a thin ribbon or hot glue also work to secure the bow.

    Making the Bow

    • Hold the ribbon in one hand with a tail hanging down. The tail can be as long or short as you like. Begin making loops, holding them in place with one hand while looping the ribbon with the other. Fan the loops out in a circle as you make the bow. When your bow looks large enough for your needs, make one final loop, then allow a length to hang down as the other end of the tail. Trim the tail ends to match.

    Layered Bows

    • If you want a layered or multi-colored floral bow, make two bows and lay them on top of each other. The bottom bow should be larger than the top bow. This is a great way to pull in different colors from a color scheme without it being too forced. Wire the two layers together with floral wire or other securing method.
