  Southold is a town located on the northeastern tip of the North Fork of Long Island in the state of New York. With Long Island Sound to the north and Southold Bay to the south, Southold is a scenic area that gets plenty of ocean weather. Although golf courses abound in Long Island, Southold does not have its own. Several public courses can be found, however, 10 or less miles away.
  
  

Sag Harbor Golf Club

• Situated 10 miles to the southeast of Southold, the Sag Harbor Golf Club facility is a nine-hole course that plays to a distance of 2,475 yards from its longest tees and is a par 35. Spread out over nearly 50 acres and located in the Barcelona Neck Natural Resources Management Area, the course sits on a peninsula and is surrounded by woodlands, hills and wetlands. Golfers can play it as a nine-hole course or play it twice to get in 18 holes of golf. This public course opened in 1926. The course is for soft spikes only and is open year round, weather permitting. Sag Harbor has a snack bar, clubhouse, practice putting greens and provides lessons.

Shelter Island Country Club

• The Shelter Island Country Club is located six miles to the east of Southold in Shelter Island Heights. Built in 1903, it is an 18-hole public courses with wide open fairways, lots of hills, small greens and several sand bunkers. Water hazards are not an issue on this course. The Shelter Island Country Club does not have a driving range, but golfers can warm up on its practice putting green. Clubs, electric carts and pull carts are all available for rent. Caddies are not available, but golfers are allowed to walk the course. The Shelter Island Country Club's clubhouse has food and alcohol drinks available.

Islands End Golf Course

• The 18-hole Islands End Golf Course in Greenport is approximately five miles north of Southold and on the tip of Long Island. Opened in 1965, the course is 6,639 yards in length from its longest tees and is a par 72. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Islands End Golf Course has multiple bunkers, tree-lined fairways and offers views of ocean bluffs. The course is part of the semi-private Islands End Country Club, but is open to the public. Groups and outings are welcomed at a course that also has a driving range, four tee boxes on each hole, a lounge, restaurant, catering and a locker room with showers. Tee times can be reserved seven days in advance and its pro shop has gift certificates.
