3 Important Things to Remember After Mastectomy Surgery

23
Having mastectomy surgery is a major life-changing event that can leave a woman both physically and emotionally drained.  When you come home from your surgery you may find it difficult to pick up right where you left off.  You may be experiencing feelings of elation, sadness, mourning, and confusion all at the same time and you're not quite sure how to handle any of them.  Following some simple guidelines will help you to find your way back to a normal lifestyle that may help in putting your mind at ease.  Here are a few suggestions.

Rest as Much as You Can

It can be very easy for you to overdo it when you get home.  Chances are you are anxious to put all the health issues behind you and you want to get back to a routine and life that is comfortable for you.  However, it is important that you give your body a chance to heal and recover.  You've undergone a great deal of trauma and you've dealt with stress levels well beyond what any normal person would be used to.  Learn how to take it easy so that you can fully recover.  Instead of doing everything yourself like you may have before, go to the salon and get your hair done.  Pamper yourself a little bit.  Learn how to take naps in the middle of the day or have someone come in and clean for you.

Medication and Pain Control

It is also important that you follow your doctor's instructions in every detail; get all your prescriptions filled as soon as possible and start taking them as prescribed.  You may need someone to help monitor your dosage to make sure that you don't get confused.  The purpose of the medication is to help reduce the amount of pain you will be suffering but it also helps you to relax so that you can speed up your recovery.

Physiotherapy

Your physiotherapist will give you some exercises that will help you to regain your range of motion and ease the stiffness that may develop in your arms and shoulders.  If you do these exercises regularly you will find your mobility increasing as the days progress and you will be better able to enjoy your life every day.

You have just undergone a major surgery that will take some time to heal.  It is extremely important that you give your body a chance to recover so that you can get back to what's important in your life.
