Questions About Breast Asymmetry

30
Beauty is judged by symmetry. If a person’s body and face are symmetrical, typically they will be considered beautiful. This follows from culture to culture throughout the world. Due to the high emphasis on symmetry for beauty, those with breast asymmetry may feel compelled to pursue a surgical solution to correct unequal breast sizes.

If your breasts are asymmetrical, rest assured that you are not alone—hundreds of women are in search of answers regarding this problem. Below are some of the most common questions about breast asymmetry to aid in your search for correcting your breast aesthetics.

What is breast asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry is when one breast size and/or shape differ from the other. Slightly asymmetrical breasts are commonplace. When asymmetrical qualities are drastic and drag down your self-confidence, a surgical solution may be appropriate.

What causes breast asymmetry?

Breast tissue development is influenced by many factors, including:

• Aging – Gravity naturally drags down breasts and may result in one breast sagging more than the other
• Weight change – When overweight, our body produces additional tissues to support breasts. When drastic and sudden weight change occurs, occasionally these tissues are unevenly removed or gained, which results in asymmetrical breasts
• Asymmetrical virginal hypertrophy – While rare, occasionally women around the age of 18 experience a sudden growth in one breast
• After breast feeding – An uneven redistribution of breast tissue following breast feeding commonly results in breast asymmetry

• Degenerative breast asymmetry – When breasts begin symmetrical but a breast condition causes one to shrink

Do asymmetrical breasts increase the risk of cancer developing?

Unfortunately, yes. For every 100ml increase in asymmetry, the risk of breast cancer developing increases by 1.5.

What surgical solutions are available to correct breast asymmetry?

Each case of breast asymmetry is different and the available solutions vary for each woman. Only through consultation with an experienced, breast surgeon can it be determined the best solution to address your breast asymmetry. Typically, a plastic surgeon will recommend:

• Reducing the larger breast
• Performing breast augmentation on the smaller breast
• A combination of both to achieve desirable shape and volume

Will reconstructive surgery decrease my risk of contracting breast cancer?

Unfortunately, reconstructive surgery to correct breast asymmetry has no affect on breast cancer risk. Women who have asymmetrical breasts should regularly undergo breast cancer screenings.

For women who pursue breast augmentation surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts, implants must be placed below the pectoral muscles to maximize mammogram accuracy.
