Vision after Lasik Eye Surgery

57
More than hundreds of million people are visually impaired in some form or other all over the world. Though external aids are available to correct vision problems, the inconvenience and cost of their maintenance over the years is pretty high. In such circumstances, laser eye surgery or ‘LASIK' surgery is one of the best solutions to this problem.

Lasik or 'laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis' has become a commonly used vision corrective technique in today's times. It involves the use of laser beam to reshape the cornea which ensures light entering the eye to be appropriately focussed onto retina providing for better vision.

Vision problems tackled by LASIK treatment

Lakhs of people worldwide undergo Lasik surgery and most of them attain 20/20 and in some cases 20/40 vision. Some of the vision problems faced by patients are as follows:

  • Near-sightedness

  • Far-sightedness

  • Astigmatism

The clarity in vision after treatment will depend upon the patient's health, age, degree of refractive error, surgeon's skill and technology used.

The outcome of Lasik procedure for each problem can be elaborated as follows:

Near-sightedness

Those patients who face mild to moderate near-sightedness enjoy the best results of Lasik treatment with faster recovery periods. Almost all of them obtain 20/20 vision after one year of surgery. However, those who are severely near-sighted may have greater probabilities of regression after the Lasik treatment. In such cases, enhancement which is a touch-up Lasik treatment is necessary for correcting regression.

Far-sightedness

Mild to moderate far-sightedness can also be effectively treated by Lasik procedure. The recovery time is slow as compared to those with problem of near sightedness and hence in most cases, one eye is treated first and treatment for the second is embarked upon after a few days. Best vision is obtained much later as the eye heals. Chances of regression are however, higher in far-sighted patients.

The severely far-sighted patients face greater risks of complications under Lasik treatment though almost all of them are treatable.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism of mild to moderate nature ranging up to 4 diopters can be effectively treated by Lasik procedure. However, the success of this treatment will depend upon the existence of other refractive errors and the degree of astigmatism.

Normally, laser eye surgery is a painless affair lasting for not more than fifteen minutes for both eyes, together. Improved vision can be experienced within 24 hours of surgery. Though the safety quotient of this treatment is excellent, some complications such as night glare or infection can occur. Though the success rates are high it is advisable to discuss all aspects of the treatment with the surgeon before proceeding further.

A lot of information is available in various media about hospitals and clinics offering LASIK treatment in Mumbai. Nearly all patients are amazed at the vision difference after Lasik surgery. However, the effectiveness of the procedure depends to a large extent on the chosenlaser eye hospital in Mumbai.
