How to Get the Smokey Eye Effect
- 1). Prep your eyelid. If you're going out for a long evening in a club or crowded restaurant, chances are you run the risk of your eye shadow gathering in the creases. This is not the look you want, so in order to keep your smoky eyes fresh all night apply a neutral concealer to your eyelid. This will become your base onto which you will apply the shadows.
- 2). Create your lash line. Take your eyeliner (a waterproof liquid liner is best) and make a line from the inside corner of your eye along the edge of your top lashes, all the way to the outer edge. Apply a thicker line in the middle of your eyelid as you make this line.
Using a pencil liner in the same color, dot along your bottom lash line. Using a cotton swab, gently smudge the eyeliner on both the lid and the lower part of the eye. - 3). Apply your first coat of eye shadow. The first coat should be a cream shade that will stabilize your colors. This first color will be the lighter color in a taupe. Blend the color from the inside of the lid, up and out to the brow bone. Repeat this step with a powder shadow in the same color.
- 4). Blend in the different colors. Starting at your lash line and sweeping upward to the crease (don't go above the crease) apply a darker shade of gray with an eye shadow brush. Blend this in until the hard line of the eye liner appears to fade into the shadow.
- 5). Add the finishing touches. Dust area just below the brow with a very thin layer of shimmery ivory. The goal is to make your eyes stand out, not the eyeshadow. Apply two coats of mascara. For longer eyelashes consider using Loreal's Double Extend mascara that creates temporary extensions.
