Is It Normal to Feel Pain When Running?

Updated December 29, 2014.

"When I first start running, my hamstrings feel really tight and sore. Is this normal, and can I run through this type of pain?"

As you increase your distance and intensity, it's normal to feel some discomfort, such as sore muscles. Sometimes you'll feel soreness when you first start your run, but it feels better as you warm up and continue running. You shouldn't be feeling real pain, though. Watch out for pain that causes you to run with a limp or altered stride, or pain that keeps getting worse as you continue running.

If you notice any of those red flags, you should stop running immediately and take a few days off.

It's also normal to feel some muscle soreness the day after or two days after running, although that should dissipate as you continue to get more pain. Here are some tips for dealing with post-run muscle soreness. If you have pain that lasts for more than a week, even after taking some rest days, consult your doctor.
