When to Colon Cleanse?

42

    Types

    • Colon cleansing is categorized under two methods. Enemas, laxatives, strong herbal teas, enzymes, powders and antiparasite capsules are all examples of colon cleansing that is achieved with powdered or liquid supplements. The objective of this method is to induce the colon to expel its waste. A supplement is taken orally or inserted into the rectum.

Colon irrigation, or high colonics, is an example of colon cleansing that achieved with hydrotherapy. Much like an enema--a rudimentary hydrotherapy system that flushes the colon with a small amount of water--high colonics requires a gravity-driven pump and flushes up to 20 gallons of water into the rectum. Waste is induced and expelled through a second tube. The procedure must be done by a hygienist or colon therapist.

Neither method is said to be painful, but some discomfort may occur. In some cases, the therapist may massage the abdomen after the colon irrigation.

    Significance

    • The theory of autointoxication states that during the digestive process undigested meat and other foods build up in the colon and remain there as toxins, mucus and bacteria. The buildup enters the blood circulation, the theory goes, and symptoms such as fatigue, headache, weight gain and low energy result. Because reflexes in the bowel affect the entire nervous system, according to WebMD, enemas and colon irrigation are thought to be effective in removing the toxins that would otherwise enter the bloodstream and induce symptoms like fatigue and low energy, for example.

    Theories/Speculation

    • Some manufacturers of colon cleaning products claim a person should undergo a colon cleanse to improve his mental outlook, improve his immune system, lose weight or reduce the risk of colon cancer. There is no medical evidence to support these claims. However, colon cleansing has been studied in relation to such health problems as fecal incontinence, ostomy (surgical connection between an intestine and the outside of the body) care, spasms during colonoscopy and drug withdrawal, according to WebMD.

    Considerations

    • The Mayo Clinic offers a four-step checklist for consumers about to undergo a colon cleanse: Speak with a healthcare professional, make sure the practitioner uses disposable equipment, read all product ingredients and stay hydrated while undergoing the procedure. The website also suggests drinking more fluids, including water, adding fiber to the diet and participating in regular exercise to reduce incidence of constipation and thereby limit the need for colon cleansing products.

    Warning

    • As WebMD says, "Natural does not mean safe." As of 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug administration does not regulate natural colon cleansing products. Claims regarding efficacy, potency and side effects cannot be guaranteed; however, a warning label is provided to caution consumers against these and other unregulated products. Such products are not illegal and can be found in health food stores, pharmacies and large retailers. Consumers should read all warning labels and contact a physician if injury occurs.
