How Does IPL Hair-Removal Work?
The goal of IPL hair removal is permanently destroy the hair bulb that will be unable to generate the follicle and then the stem of the hair.
The life cycle of the hair is very important for proper IPL hair removal: There are 3 phases: anagen (growth), catagen (regression) and telogen (rest).
The three phases alternate in cycles and their length varies in different parts of the body.
The anagen phase is also characterized by the formation of melanin; this is the reason that allows IPL hair removal to work effectively only on the active hair follicles.
The IPL is a polychromatic light at high intensity.
This light is converted into heat if it hits a specific color, in our case the melanin of the hair.
The physic principle upon which is based this action is called photothermolysis: in practice the light pulse, thanks to its power, has a high ability to penetrate and reach the hair bulb, here it is transformed into heat by the melanin present in the active bulbs.
This considerable increase in temperature allows the destruction of the bulb and capillaries, that carry nutrients to the hair bulb.
This is referred as the action of selective photothermolysis for the bulb.
In the first session a specialist will examine the skin: it is necessary to evaluate the skin phototype, the size, depth and color of hair and the condition of the skin.
Also the visit must exclude hormonal disorders, the presence of inflammatory processes, the possiblephotosensitizing medication taken and the presence of contraindications.
The first session, finally, aims to identify the parameters to adapt the treatment to the characteristics of each patient.
Each session begins with a thorough cleansing, followed by a shaving of the hair to 2mm, so that the effect of photothermolysis disperses and don't focus on the bulb.
The doctor can deal effectively and definitively all parts of the body.
The treatment begins with recording on the computer the color of the skin and hair of the patient, and its location.
The pulse is emitted from the source and filtered by special quartz crystals specific for the size of area to be treated and the depth of the hair.
IPL Hair removal does not damage surrounding tissues and it's painless even after the treatment, you just feel a slight sensation of heat, also sensitive skin may experience some mild redness, called erythema which disappears a few hours after the treatment.
The only absolute contraindication: You cannot undergo IPL hair removal if you're tanned, in that case three weeks must pass prior to treatment.
IPL Hair removal is not possible to be completed in one session, because it is necessary to adapt it to the life cycle of the hair bulb that has to be in the anagen phase to be photo-sensitive, and varies from one area of the body to another.
For this reason we need a minimum of 3 sessions (eg.
: 3 sessions for face and chin, mustache and groin 4-5 session, legs up to 9 sessions).
Between one session and the other an average of four weeks must pass.
It should be noted that the first two, three sessions are the most important and effective, the following ones are improvements.
The duration of the sessions varies according to the area to be treated from a few minutes to an hour or so.
Normal redness will be eliminated simply by applying a soothing cream 3 times daily for 4 days.
After 3-4 days the treated hair will fall.
