How to Cure a Hangover
- 1). Eat bland foods that your body can tolerate. Things like bread, crackers and broth-based soups are usually acceptable, but anything that your body doesn’t reject is fine. The purpose is to restore the nutrients your body has lost through vomiting or lack of food.
- 2). Consume sodium by eating soup made with bouillon, or drinking sports drinks, which are high in sodium. Your body loses sodium when you drink alcohol and replacing the lost sodium is essential to making you feel better.
- 3). Eat or drink natural sugars like fruit, fructose, honey or other natural sweeteners. These may help you feel better, but there is little evidence that they will help your body burn off the alcohol faster, as was previously thought.
- 4). Drink plenty of water. Your body is dehydrated after drinking because of the increase in urination that alcohol encourages. Drinking plenty of water or a sports drink allows your body to rehydrate, which goes a long way toward making you feel better.
- 5). Take a pain reliever. A regular dose of an over-the-counter pain reliever can ease the headache that often accompanies a hangover.
- 6). Rest throughout the day and get to bed early if you can. Drinking alcohol can make you drowsy or even cause you to pass out, but the quality of sleep that you get after drinking isn’t very good, so even if you have slept, your body may not be rested.
- 7). Give it time. The only cure for a hangover is time and most hangovers will go away within 24 hours, though some may last for several days depending on the severity.
