How to Pick a Homecoming Dress
- 1). Ask around. If it's your first homecoming, find out from older friends what last year's event was like. Check out photos on Facebook to get a feel for how people dressed. Was it very formal with girls donning floor-length gowns? Or was it more casual than you'd expect, with knee-length dresses and flats? Last year's homecoming can often be a good indicator of this year's.
- 2). Know what you're after. Try to have at least a basic idea of the kind of dress you want before you hit the shopping shelves. Consider things like the neckline: do you want to go strapless, one-shoulder, standard, or cap-sleeved? Do you prefer a fitted waist, or a sleeker, flowy number? Know what you want ahead of time. This will save you time and energy when shifting through endless racks of options.
- 3). Steer clear of too many trends. As tempting as it might be to take a cue from the homecoming dress guides in fashion magazines, remember that trends are short-lived, but pictures from your homecoming will be around for awhile. When in doubt, stick to a classic cut and color that makes you feel confident and flatters your best features.
- 4). Accessorize. The dress is the most important piece of the equation, but don't forget your jewelery and shoes. This is where you can go for statement pieces. If you're wearing your hair up, don't shy away from bold earrings. If you're trying to measure up to your boyfriend on the basketball team, break out those heels. And don't always match everything; contrasting colors and textures are much more eye-catching and youthful than four shades of pink.
