Resveratrol is a powerful anti-oxidant found in fruits like cranberries, mulberries, raspberries and red grapes, the primary ingredient of red wine.
As an anti-oxidant, the said agent keeps the body shielded from harmful chemicals known as free radicals that break down the body healthy cells.
And since resveratrol in wine, especially in red wine, has been considered as the largest in terms of dosage, this drink has been deemed as a part of a healthy diet.
However, some studies have shown that not all wine contain the same amount of the anti-oxidant.
A wine bottle may be greater or lesser in resveratrol since the concentration of it depends on some factors.
One factor that affects the anti-oxidant concentration level is the process of how the grapes were grown: organically or not.
Grapes that are grown organically, like those found in the central part of Europe, are said to have high-level of resveratrol.
On the other hand, those which are grown with sprays of pesticides are considered to have less or sometimes have no resveratrol because these products prevent fungal infections.
It is said that the anti-oxidant agent is a product of the plants' natural defense to these infections; hence, if they were suppressed, resveratrol was suppressed as well.
The climate also is a crucial factor; places or areas with dry climates usually cause poor production of the agent in plants.
Another factor that affects resveratrol level in wine includes the fermentation process: the longer the grape skins are present, the higher the resveratrol content.
That is why white wine has been proven to have lower concentration because the grapes' skins are removed early on.
Wine has great potential in providing the body with the said agent.
But for a person to reach the body optimum level of resveratrol, over one hundred bottle of wine must be consumed everyday.
This may not sound like a great idea since wines are known to be expensive.
And they also contain alcoholic elements that may pose danger in the process.
Do not worry though because there are still other foods that offer the said agent such as peanuts, raspberries, blueberries and cranberries.
