How to Prevent Good Old Wrinkles

75
Ever hear the expression "With mirth and laughter, let old wrinkles come.
"? That is a quote from the Shakespearean play The Merchant of Venice.
It refers to the idea wrinkling is caused by habitual facial expressions.
People may blame the lines on laughing or frowning.
Shakespeare was referring to the idea that people should feel free to be happy and expressive, even if that meant that a wrinkle might appear in old age.
You might be happy to know that habitual facial expressions are not really what cause wrinkling.
Long after the days of Shakespeare we started learning about the presence of molecules, the tiny components that come together to form all manner of things.
Only in recent years have scientists identified the molecular damage that causes the signs of aging.
Free radicals are molecules naturally present within the cells of the body.
Normally, they go about their business, performing some essential functions, such as the destruction of intercellular bacteria.
But, when these molecules are exposed to UV radiation, they go a little crazy.
They start bouncing around within the cells, damaging membranes and stealing electrons from cellular DNA.
Antioxidants are other molecules present within the cells of our body.
They help prevent old wrinkles, by voluntarily giving one of their electrons to the free radical molecules.
That converts the radical into oxygen and water, effectively neutralizing it.
Here's the problem.
As we get older, there are more free radicals within our skin cells and fewer antioxidants.
So, the radical molecules are able to do more and more damage, until finally a person looks wrinkled and their complexion becomes splotchy.
Our primary source of exposure to UV radiation is through exposure to sunlight.
Because of that, most of the anti-aging creams on the market contain some kind of sunscreen.
But, those sunscreens really don't do anything to prevent or reverse old wrinkles.
In order for sunscreens to be effective, they must be reapplied on a regular basis throughout the day or over the course of time that a person spends out of doors.
We usually apply lotions, creams and cosmetics once a day.
So, sunscreen ingredients are worthless.
In addition, a sunscreen ingredient can never do anything to reverse free radical damage that has already occurred.
Luckily, some antioxidants can.
Most antioxidants, such as vitamin E, are recommended for inclusion in skincare products, because they prevent free radical damage.
Vitamin E creams are known to help prevent age spots, for example.
An antioxidant called coenzyme Q10 can help prevent and reverse old wrinkles.
Research has shown that after 30 days of using a COQ10 cream, wrinkling and sun damage is reduced by about 30%.
So, we can laugh all we want.
They say that laughter is the best medicine, after all.
But, it may turn out that antioxidants are actually the best medicine.
They work inside and outside of our bodies to prevent age-related diseases and the outward signs of aging.
In other words, old wrinkles don't have to come, if we don't want them to.
