Well-Balanced Diet Must Be Followed by Mothers During Pregnancy for Their Children to Healthy

A child's health would greatly be affected by the mother's nutritional intake during pregnancy in the future as said in a study.

University Southampton in UK, Singapore and New Zealand researchers conducted a research to find out if there is a relationship between a pregnant mother's diet and obesity of her child in the coming the years. Epigenetic change occurs when the function of the DNA is modified which then causes an above average fat accumulation in the child's body. Nonetheless, the weight of a child at birth and the mother's weight are not correlated to the changes that occur.

Keith Godfrey, a professor of Epidemiology and Human Development at the University of Southampton and head of the study, explains that susceptibility to obesity cannot be simply attributed to the combination of the genes and the lifestyle, but can be triggered by the influences on a baby's development in the womb, including the mother's food intake. The mother's nutrition while pregnant can cause important epigenetic changes that can contribute to the risk of obesity to her child during childhood.

The researchers noted epigenetic changes occur in more than 300 children at birth. In addition, they were able to find a way to foresee the degree of obesity at age six to nine. They also noted a difference in the sizes of obese children and predicted 25% of the difference.

Because of the finance and support from the UK Medical Research Council, the National Institute for Health Research, WellChild, the University of Southampton and the Arthritis Research UK, the study was made possible.

Epigenetic changes alter the functions of DNA, but lacked the ability to change the sequence of DNA itself that is innate from the biological parents of the child. According to studies, the factor that influences a person's lifestyle may also be affected by epigenetic changes that happened at birth.

Mark Hanson, part of the research team, British Heart Foundation Professor and University of Southampton's Director for Human Development and Health Unit, explained the importance of epigenetic changes to children. He and other scientists stressed the importance of health education to women and especially to those who wanted to be pregnant. Health education topics should include a well balanced diet and good lifestyle. Furthermore, He believes that with this discovery, appropriate remedies can be made to improve on the health care education not only for women but also for children. Above all, one must be fully aware things related to one's health so as to prevent illnesses and promote a healthy lifestyle for families.
