Although prickly heat, or heat rash, is usually more common in infants, adults can experience it as well. Prickly heat generally heals itself with little effort on your part and generally there are no serious complications associated with it; however, there are a few complications that can occur. It is important to know the signs so that you know when medical attention is necessary.

    Heat Stroke

    • When you are suffering from prickly heat, the ducts for your sweat glands become blocked and the sweat is unable to escape. When this occurs, your body is unable to release excess heat. During this time, it is likely you will begin to experience symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, excessive thirst and a generalized weakness. As the body continues to retain sweat, heat stroke can occur as you overheat. Heat stroke is characterized by high fevers (sometimes as high as 105 degrees F), headache and disorientation. If heat stroke is not treated and the body is not cooled, death can occur.

    Skin Infections

    • It is not clear exactly what causes prickly heat; however, according to Healthline, it is believed that bacteria that are normally found on the skin block the glands, preventing sweat from escaping. In addition to the discomfort from the rash, it can also cause bacterial infections. One common infection is a staph skin infection. It usually presents as skin sores such as boils or crusted ulcers. The severity of the infection varies per person and is usually treated by antibiotics. Fungi can become trapped in the glands as well. Fungal infections are generally denoted by itching or burning skin as well as rashes with defined edges.

    Severe Infections

    • From time to time, the clogged sweat glands can result in a more serious infection. When severe infections occur, seek medical attention immediately. These infections can enter the blood stream and can affect more than just the surface of the skin. The skin surrounding the prickly heat rash may become warm to the touch, swollen or visually reddened. Another common sign is swollen lymph nodes in the neck, groin or under the arm. Red streaking under the skin is another common sign of a severe infection, as well as a fever without the signs of heat stroke or other illness.
