If you are one of the many unfortunate people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, you may feel completely at your wits end about food choices and what you can eat without ending up ill. It is important to really concentrate on not consuming foods that will not aggravate your Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
In a normal digestive tract, when you eat, your oesophagus, stomach and intestinal tract reacts with nice gentle contractions that move along the digestive tract easily. If you suffer with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, this changes the process and often the contractions are sped up, and then slow right down and often the contractions get really strong. The gut becomes severely irritated and you then suffer one or all of the following symptoms. Bloating, pain, constipation and even diarrhoea.
Unfortunately, stress can trigger an irritable bowel syndrome attack which is really bad because the symptoms added to stress couple for a very unpleasant time.
A food diary comes in very handy when you are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome because you will really be able to identify the trigger foods as well as the trigger factors and even the foods that settle your irritable bowel syndrome.
If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, most doctors will tell you to increase your fibre intake. This is good advice BUT too much fibre during an attack can cause you to feel worse. Too much fibre too soon may give you gas and bloating on top of your other symptoms. So, it is a good idea to introduce a little bit of fibre slowly each day to start with. Add an extra serving of cooked vegetables each day to start with. Add an extra serve of fruit per day the following week. Make sure you are drinking at least eight glasses of water a day because without enough water, fibre can harden and shrink causing constipation.
Aim for two serves of fruit per day, five serves of vegetables and three servings of whole grains each day and eight glasses of water.
Yoghurt is a must for irritable bowel syndrome relief. Their have been many studies to support the fact that yoghurt and fermented milk products that contain live cultures can help reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Chamomile tea is also a wonderful soothing tea that contains glycine which is an amino acid that helps to relieve muscle spasms. When you suffer with irritable bowel syndrome, it is advisable to avoid milk and cheese and foods that are too spicy as they can certainly irritate the gut. Coffee also contains an enzyme that irritates the digestive tract so stay away from coffee. Also avoid beer, wine and spirits, all carbonated drinks and any sweets or foods that contain sorbitol which can act as a laxative.
