What is cholesterol

Cholesterol is a substance found in all cells of the body. The body needs some cholesterol to work properly. The body needs cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help digest food. The body manufactures all the cholesterin it needs and it is also present in foods.

Types of cholesterol

Like oil and vinegar, blood and cholesterol do not mix. To travel through the bloodstream, cholesterin is carried in small packages called lipoproteins. These lipoproteins are made of fat. Two types of cholesterin carrying lipoproteins through the body, LDL and HDL. It is important to healthy amounts of both.

Cholesterol low density lipoprotein (LDL)

The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is known as bad cholesterol. High levels of this type leads to accumulation of cholesterol plaque in arteries. The higher the level of this type of blood cholesterol, the greater the chances a person has heart disease.

Cholesterol high density lipoprotein (HDL)

The high density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as good cholesterol. HDL cholesterol load elsewhere in the body back to the liver. The liver then removes cholesterol from the body. The higher the level of HDL, the lower the chances of people developing heart disease.

Dangers of high blood cholesterol

Too much cholesterol in the blood can be a serious health threat. People with high blood cholesterol have a greater chance of developing heart disease. High blood cholesterol does not cause symptoms itself, so many people are unaware that their cholesterol levels are high.

Cholesterol can build up in the form of plaques in artery walls. In time, plaque can narrow the arteries causing atherosclerosis. Special arteries, called coronary arteries supply blood to the heart. The buildup of plaque in these arteries can decrease or stop the flow of blood to the heart. This condition is known as coronary artery disease. Areas with large plates poden cause chest pain called angina, which occurs when the heart can not get enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina is a common symptom of coronary artery disease.

Some cards have a thin coating that can break releasing cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream. Release of fat and cholesterol can cause blood to clot. The clots can block blood flow tiring angina or heart attack.

Lowering cholesterol levels in the blood decreases the chances of having a plaque rupture and heart attack. Lower blood cholesterol may also reduce or even stop plaque formation.

People have excess blood cholesterol diet, and because the rate at which the cholesterin is processed in the body. Most of the excess cholesterol diet is. Blood test can be done to check the total cholesterol, LDL and HDL types and other types of fat and triglyceride in the blood. If it is discovered that cholesterin is high, your doctor may prescribe medications and changes in lifestyle such as diet, weight control and exercise.
