Etiquette Tips for Game Day

31

Three of my four daughters are competitive gymnasts. Now, to clarify I must add that although they are in the Junior Olympic categories they are all three compulsory level gymnasts. This means that they are learning the basics and not yet doing back flips on the balance beam! These girls practice eight hours weekly all year round in preparation for competitive meets. And like so many of you, guess who sits right there through the practices waiting, watching and bleacher style coaching?

That's correct, I do. So, I really do understand the excitement parents feel on 'Game Day.' We're ready to see some results and for our little mini-me children to win some medals, games, or whatever it is they do in their sport.
Here's the Problem...
Too often we forget that the other parents sitting around us share our same enthusiasm about the game or event and that they are just as eager to see and enjoy their child's performance.
It comes down, once again, to personal style; Let yours shine even at the ball park.
On that wise, let's look at some ways we can lessen some of our fellow minor league sports fan's frustrations. Remembering to be thoughtful will go a long way toward making everyone's day at the ball park a little more pleasant.

  1. 5 Ways to Show Style During Your Child's Sports Event.
  2. Be Considerate and use the restroom before you take your seat. This is important especially if you have little one's or a large family. It can be very inconvenient to have to keep getting up and down because the family beside you has eight children who can't seem to stay seated.

  1. Be Kind. You never know who may be seated beside you so in order to avoid any problems keep your opinions and criticisms to yourself. Remember to do unto others as you would like for them to do unto you!
  2. Obey the Rules. This can be difficult for some parents but I urge you to be good examples. In gymnastics, flash photography can be very dangerous. Even so, you would be surprised at how many parents flash away all during the meets.
  3. Allow the Coach to Coach. It may seem like you have some tip to offer during the game that would be helpful--but take a deep breath and don't do it. It is rude to dishonor your child's coach in this public setting. If you really have a concern about his or her abilities you should schedule a private meeting with him or her at a more appropriate time to address your concerns.
  4. Be Mannerly. Show your style and class by not being overly rowdy, boisterous or loud during the meet or game. You don't want to embarrass your child nor yourself so try to be reserved in your cheering and applause.

This list is by no means exhaustive, however ,if followed these simple yet gracious tips will go a long way toward building your reputation as a composed lady or gentleman who is considerate of others and who cares about their comfort.
