The Most Flattering Hairstyles Ever

24
My Best Picks from Short Hair, Shoulder-Length Cuts, Long Hair & More

Many women with round faces want to camouflage the roundness, rather than highlight it. The secret to a great hairstyle on a round face is to create the illusion of length instead of roundness.

In this gallery, I'll highlight how to do this.

Keep in mind face shape isn't the only factor you should consider when opting for a new hairstyle. Your hair texture and personality are just as important. Find out why in 6 Things to Consider Before You Get a New Hairstyle.

This cut on Emma Stone (see a photo gallery of Stone's best hairstyles) works beautifully with her round face. Here's why it works:
  • Long hair is gorgeous on round faces because it lengthens the face. If you have a round face, your best cuts will fall a few inches below the chin and longer. Stone's cut skims her collarbone and "the ends aren't quite blunt or layered," says her hairstylist, Mara Roszak to Allure Magazine. Roszak snipped vertically into the bottom inch. See more long hairstyles for inspiration.
  • She has long, choppy layers. The shortest layer should never be above your earlobe and ideally should fall at your chin, like Stone's does, here. Too-short layers make a hairstyle appear dated and will add volume to the sides of the face, making it appear even rounder. You don't want that. Stone's layers are blended in so well that you can't tell there are layers. "I cut into the ends of each layer to make them all blend together," Roszak told Allure.
  • Long, side-swept bangs create angles on a round face. "We went for long bangs that hit around her cheekbone," says Roszak to Allure. "They angle down from there, which makes them fall nicely with the rest of her hair." Learn more about bangs and round faces in Best Bangs by Face Shape.
  • Gentle waves deflect the roundness of the face, so if you have natural wave in your hair (as most women do), allow your hair to do its natural "thing." Scrunch hair as it dries so it retains some of its wave or help along the wave by wrapping hair around the barrel of a large curling iron as Stone's stylist did here.

Stone's stylist Mara Roszak gave Allure Magazine detailed instructions on this hairstyle. Find out what she did in this article.

Mila Kunis Hair: Long, Straight Hair is Very Flattering on a Round Face

Long hair always looks great on a round face and Mila Kunis proves it. Kunis has a round face and frequently wears her hair long and straight or wavy. This style is flattering on a round face because long hair creates the illusion of length in the face and the straight hair doesn't add body to the sides of the face. In fact, the curtain effect has a nice way of slimming a round face.

Also note her center part.

"If you want to wear a center part, the way to make it work for a round face is to have hair a few inches past your shoulders with layers that hit at the jaw," says hairstyle Chris McMillan in Allure Magazine. "Ask your stylist to cut in a bit on the sides to create subtle angles."

Musts for this look:
  1. To get pin-straight hair, invest in a flat iron. And read this before you use it: How to Use a Flat Iron.
  2. Learning how to properly blow dry your hair can make a huge difference in your hair's appearance. See The Perfect Blowout -- How to Blow Dry Your Hair.

Be Careful With Short Hair if You Have a Round Face

Kirsten Dunst has a naturally round face and both of these hairstyles work well on her, although I prefer the right, longer hairstyle on her. I feel it makes her round face appear less round.

Why the left hairstyle works on Dunst: Bobs are usually (not always) a no-no on round faces because they can accentuate the roundness of a face, but you can get away with a piece-y long bob, as Dunst does here.

Make sure the bob hits at least a couple inches below the chin and make sure it's styled imprecisely. For inspiration, check out this photo gallery of long bob hairstyles.

Why the right hairstyle works on Dunst: Again, length is key. Long hair elongates a round face and the way the hair falls like a curtain, it hides some of the softness of Dunst's face. You have a million long hair options for your round face. See Long Hair: My Favorite Long Hairstyle Photos for ideas that fit your hair texture.

Which Short Hairstyles Work on a Round Face?

Cameron Diaz is proof rules are meant to be broken. Usually bobs and short cuts in general don't look good on round face shapes, but this particular bob looks fantastic on Cameron Diaz, who has a natural round face. Why? Her side-swept bangs add angles to her hairstyle and her hair is very straight so it doesn't add width to the sides of her head. Note the absolutely gorgeous blonde hair color she has here.

Trust me, it's not natural.

But going short isn't for the faint of heart. Diaz revealed in early 2012 on the Jay Leno Show that she wasn't very happy with her short bob when she first got it. Turns out it was much shorter than she expected.

"I just burst into tears and started crying, and I felt so vulnerable," Diaz told Leno. Apparently, Diaz was so upset, she yelled, which made her stylist cry. "I ended up writing her a few emails after, the next couple days, assuring her I wasn't going to kill her," Diaz said.

Diaz wore her hair short for about a year before she began growing it out.

Short Haircuts Can Be Tricky on a Round Face

Short haircuts are tricky on round faces because many short cuts add width to the sides of the face -- a no-no for round faces. Avoid jaw-length bobs if you have a round face, especially if you were also blessed with a short neck. Any blunt cut at the chin will accentuate roundness.

If you opt for short hair, make sure you have layers cut in, as Ginnifer Goodwin does with this edgy short haircut.

Why this look on Goodwin (a classic round face) works:

The longer bangs actually add definition to Goodwin's gorgeous delicate features.

You never want short hair to fall flat against the sides of the head. Goodwin's hair here has a lot of layers cut in, which is a must for a round face.

How to Wear Your Hair in an Updo

Women with round faces can wear updos to formal events and this trendy look on model Kate Upton the left is a great option for a classic updo. Note how pulling the bangs up high creates the illusion that Upton -- a natural round face -- has a more elongated face.

The look on the left is a great example of another gorgeous hairstyle on a round face. Here, Upton wears her blonde hair long and wavy, which is a gorgeous look for women with rounded features.

The long hair also elongates her round face. I wish I could wear my hair long, but long hair on a long face just doesn't work well.

Shoulder-Length Hairstyles Are Very Flattering

Shoulder-length hairstyles are universally flattering on all face shapes. This casual style looks great on actress (and naturally round-faced) Olivia Munn.

The last thing you want to do if you have a round face is add fullness to the sides of your head. If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, cut in layers to weigh it down and make sure to grow it a couple inches or more below your chin.

How to Make Curly Hair Work on a Round Face

Curls works great with round faces as long as the curl begins below the lips. Again, you don't want to add width to the sides of the face.

If you have curly hair, grow hair so that when it's dry it is longer than your chin. Cut in layers so it doesn't get fluffy and you don't end up with a "triangle" look where the ends poof out like a Christmas tree.

I recommend looking for a stylist who specializes in cutting curly hair (curly hair is great when cut dried, so the stylist can see where the curls naturally fall).

The stylist may need to thin out your hair to tame the fullness. You may also consider straightening your hair or taming your curls into waves with the help of relaxers and curling irons.

An Upswept Updo & a Center Part: 2 Great Looks on a Round Face

I hate to call actress Amber Tamblyn out for a bad hairstyle because she is just so cool, but this updo on her to the left simply does not flatter her round face shape. In fact, it makes her face appear even rounder. You can wear updos if you have a round face, just make sure there's some lift at the top. I have examples of great updos throughout this gallery, so keep clicking and reading.

Tamblyn looks great on the left.

Her long hair is curled into waves and the look is super flattering. Note how her hair curls away from her face.

Long Hair, Round Faces: Which Long Hairstyles Work on Round Faces?

Here are examples of 2 gorgeous looks on actress Scarlett Johansson's natural round face.

The updo on the left looks great on her because her bangs are upswept, creating the illusion of a longer face. On the right, the middle part flatters her round face. Just make sure your long hair has layers in it, otherwise the cut will look dated (think 70s hippie).

Two Great Cuts on a Round Face

"A round face looks really good with an uneven cut, meaning a mix of lengths," says hairstylist Chris McMillan in Allure Magazine.

Got a Round Face? Let Your Natural Waves Out

Emma Stone (see a photo gallery of Stone's best hairstyles) has a naturally round face and here she is shown in 2 different hairstyles with one thing in common: side-swept bangs. The bangs bring the eye over and down, creating the appearance of angles on what is otherwise a soft, rounded face.

Side-swept bangs look best when they hit at the cheekbone on a woman with a round face.

Do Pixie Haircuts Look Good on Round Faces?

Most women have some natural wave in their hair. If you have a round face, such as Glee's Jenna Ushkowitz, pictured here, let your natural waves out.

    Here are some tips:
    1. This works on all hair lengths, even super short cuts, but it is most flattering on round faces with hair that's longer than the chin.
    2. Wash hair.
    3. Apply a salt spray and comb it through hair. I like Bumble and Bumble spray or you can make your own. See How to Make Salt Spray.

    1. Let hair air dry. As it's drying, take your hair into your palm and squeeze it. This allows your natural wave to come out. so natural waves come out.

Once hair is dried, you can play with your hair, twisting it and pinning it back or creating little braids on the sides and pinning them back.

What Type of Bangs Work Best on a Round Face?

Not all pixie hairstyles will look great on a round face shape (ones too cropped to the head like a cap can accentuate roundness), but this one on Alicia Quarles works beautifully because it adds lift at the top of the head, elongating a round face.

"All those little pieces help emphasize the cheekbones and eyes; it's almost as if you build in cheekbones with this cut," says stylist Jimmy Paul in Allure Magazine.

Celebrities with Round Faces: The Good and the Bad

The bangs here on actress Katherine McPhee (who has a natural round face) perfectly complement her feminine, delicate features. The key to the right bangs on a round face is the cut. InStyle magazine suggests you ask for a "graphic, curved shape...and be sure bangs are thick." You'll notice that McPhee's bangs here are shorter in the middle and longer on the sides. One great fact about being a round face shape is women with your face shape tend to age well, according to celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Tony Youn on MSNBC. He had this to say about round face shapes, "Women with rounder faces, typically are much slower to show their age than women with longer faces, since they tend to retain the fullness and softness of youth."

Got Curls & a Round Face? How to Flaunt Your Ringlets

Both Kate Bosworth and Stella McCartney (pictured here) are celebrities with classic round faces. However, Kate models a great hairstyle for her face shape. You Can't Go Wrong With a Classic Long Bob

If you have a round face and curly hair, it's best not to cut hair chin-length because it accentuates the roundness. This cut is just long enough, but would look even better on a round face if allowed to grow out a few inches. Keri Russell's curls have been tamed here, her natural hair is much curlier. If you have a round face, tame curls by wrapping hair around a large-barreled curling iron. This creates bigger curls, rather than the small spirals.

    Kelly Osbourne's Punk Cut

Bob hairstyles are universally beloved, but the classic bob that hits at the chin won't look as good on a round face as a long bob, like the one pictured here on actress Sunny Mabrey.

A straight cut that falls at the jawline or above it can actually accentuate roundness, whereas the uber-popular "long bob" is usually an inch or 2 longer than the jawline and flatters a round face because of the length.

This cut works beautifully on Mabrey's round face because it almost hits at her shoulders. I've seen other, shorter cuts on her, that accentuate her round face.

The lesson here? Grow your bob longer.

The long bob is perfect for round faces because it works on all hair textures, from straight and fine to wavy. Even women with thick, coarse hair can wear a long bob.

What's more, it's The Hottest Hairstyle of the Moment. So many celebrities are chopping off their long hair into a long bob. See 16 such examples in my new gallery, 16 Celebs Who Went From Long to a Long Bob.

How to Wear the Long Bob

This is an extremely versatile haircut. You can wear it straight and flat-ironed and it's great for wash-and-go girls because it air dries well. And even if you don't have natural waves, you can create them with a curling iron. Find out how in my article, How to Create 'Beachy' Waves.

For a more modern bob, make sure the back of the cut is shorter than the front and the ends have texture and are wispy.

Texture and an angle add interest to what can be an otherwise boring style.

    Maria Menounos's Gorgeous Braid

I absolutely love this lilac pompadour on Kelly Osbourne. The cut is incredible dramatic and attention-getting but can be worn in a several different ways. And it works beautifully with Osbourne's natural round face because it adds a ton of volume to the top of her head. Someone with a long face like me would look like Mrs. Potato Head in such a style. Long, skinny faces have no business adding volume up, we need to add volume out.

Remember, it's all about creating the allusion that we all have a perfect oval face.

So who can get away with a punk cut? The key here lies in your personality and your hair texture. You've got to have a bit of edge in your dress and in your personality to pull off a funky cut, otherwise you can look like a woman with a really bad haircut. As for hair texture, if you see a cut you like, you should consider if your hair texture can handle it. Fine hair will fall flat without some products and curly hair will pouf up if cut too straight. Consult with a stylist before you commit to a funky cut.

Another Edgy Look Worn 2 Ways

This is a gorgeous hairstyle for a round face shape. Maria Menounos wears her thick, coarse, long hair in a braid that runs up and over her head. This look is trendy and gorgeous and would look great on a round face because the braid up top adds volume to the top of the head. What's more: braids are not just for kids. You can wear them well into your 30s and even 40s. I've even seen some braids on older women that are absolutely gorgeous.

(See more photos of braided hair).

Hair texture is just as important as face shape when it comes to choosing a hair cut or style. Each one of us can classify our hair into one or more hair texture types: Dry, coarse, curly, wavy, straight, fine, stringy, limp, oily. If you have thin, stringy hair that tends to fall flat, your hair will look fuller the shorter it is.

Coarse, curly girls need to weigh hair down with length: The shorter you go, the higher the frizz and fluff factor. Same thing with bangs. If you have curly, coarse hair, bangs are an invitation to frizziness. Straight hair can fall flat, but cutting in layers adds body. And no matter your hair type, damaged hair never looks good. Cut it off.

    Kris Jenner's Edgy Pixie

The singer Pink always has the edgiest haircuts. Her haircut here would work beautifully on an edgy woman with a round face. The pictures were taken just weeks apart, so you can see how the style can be worn 2 ways (and actually more).

Heidi Klum's Middle Part is Perfect for a Round face

The pixie is one of the hottest hairstyles of the moment. It's so popular, it made my list of the Year's 20 Most Popular Hairstyles. The pixie flatters most face shapes, works with almost all hair textures and better yet, it looks great on women of all ages, whether you're 15 or 80.

Here, Kris Jenner (a natural round face) wears a pixie hairstyle. Note the angles on the cut, some pixies that fall to flat to the head can look like a helmet.

The secret to a pixie cut is to get volume via volumizing mousses and sprays and make sure your stylist cuts in long bangs that you can wear swept to the side. And don't be afraid to add body to the top of the head -- your goal is to create the allusion of height.

Before you jump on the pixie bandwagon, ask yourself:
    • What is your personality like, do you like attention? If you are the sort who hides behind her hair or hates attention, think twice before hitting the salon.
    • Are you ready for a big change? If you hate your pixie, it may take months or even years to grow back, so keep this in mind before you get the chop-chop.
    • Do you mind salon visits? If you are lazy or hate going to the salon, a pixie might not be for you. It's one of the most high maintenance cuts. You'll need a trim every 4-6 weeks to keep your hair looking fresh.

See Jenner in her younger years in my gallery of Bruce Jenner's Transformation: Photos of Him Over the Years. She's always worn her hair in a pixie, it seems.

    More:

    Dakota Fanning's Middle Part

Here, Heidi Klum parts her hair in the middle, which is an excellent option for women with round faces. This allows the hair to fall in a curtain on either side of the face, in effect "hiding" the roundness of the face. Klum also has long layers cut in with the shortest layer hitting at her jawline. This gives the allusion of angles, which is good on a round face.

Kirsten Dunst Wears Side-swept Bangs and Long Hair

Here is another example of a long hairstyle parted down the middle. Note how the hair falls like a curtain on the sides of actress Dakota Fanning's face. This hairstyle visually thins out Fanning's naturally round face, giving her the appearance of having an oval face.

See How to Find the Part in Your Hair to get this look right.

    More fun hair stuff:

Carla Zampatti's Long Bob is Perfect on Her Round Face

If you have straight hair and a round face, consider these styles on actress Kirsten Dunst (a natural round face). The long, side-swept bangs add angles to round features and the long length actually creates the allusion that Dunst's face is not round.

    More on this look:
    • Note her gorgeous highlights. If you have a great base (dirty blonde hair is the perfect base, according to my stylist at Eva Scrivo Salon in NYC), consider balayage highlights.

    Mariella Frostrup's Long Bob

This long bob on fashion designer Carla Zampatti is one of my favorites because it defies age. Zampatti's hair is thick, has a beautiful sheen and color and is a very flattering on her round  face shape.

As I've said earlier in this slideshow, round faces are not usually well-suited to bobs. A round face can look rounder with hair cut to the chin, encasing the head like a helmet. The better bob option for a round face is the long bob such as this one with long, side-swept bangs.

    Why this style works:
    • Side-swept bangs add angles to otherwise soft features.
    • Lack of body. You don't want too add width to the sides of the head when you have a round face.
    • She has a long neck. Women with short necks need length to elongate their necks. You don't want a bob to hit right at the jaw when you have a short, thick neck.

Her hair is backcombed and teased so it's full on top of her head and cascades thickly down her back. Also note the long layers cut into her hair.
