    Natural On-the-Scalp

    • Natural on-the-scalp recipes are ideal for people who have sensitive scalps because these solutions work slowly over a period of time. For example, you might apply a lightening solution weekly, bi-weekly or monthly to fade your hair one or more shades. Usually, lemon juice or chamomile tea are best when combined with sun exposure.

      People who are sensitive to lemon or chamomile might consider natural facial hair lighteners. Facial hair lighteners are made from fruits with a lower vitamin C concentrate or from a gelatinous substance that has a cooling effect. Fresh tomato has a high level of vitamin C but offers gelatinous cooling, whereas ground orange peels have a lower vitamin C content and can be mixed with milk to make a paste. Depending on your tolerance, natural recipes can be left in your hair for hours or days.

    Over the Counter

    • Over the counter lighteners make on-the-scalp lightening easy. However, there are risks to using them. Despite the conditioners or oils commonly pre-mixed into these products, side effects are inevitable for some people. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that you follow the box instructions exactly and make sure that the ingredients are mixed well. Many cases of scalp burn are the result of uneven distribution of the ammonia and peroxide in these products. This can be prevented by thoroughly mixing the solution before applying it to your scalp. In addition, many professionals recommend extra conditioning after performing on-the-scalp lightening.

    Salon Lightening

    • Going to a professional is the safest way to lighten your hair while minimizing the risk of damage or injury. Although many salons offer on-the-scalp lightening, it is wise to examine the condition of a client's hair prior to making an appointment. Unfortunately, many stylists or salons will decline such a request. If you decide to have your hair professionally lightened, deep condition it near the scalp prior to the salon visit.

    • The manufacturers of over-the-counter lightening products recommend that you perform a skin patch test before proceeding with the procedure. Ideally, apply the lightener to a patch on your forearm or to an area on your body with hair. Let the solution set for the recommended time, and then determine if on-the-scalp lightening is safe for you. If you experience a burning sensation, rinse the solution off immediately. Remember, even if your skin patch test goes well, the FDA warns that your scalp may still burn. Be sure to pay close attention during application of the solution.
