Definition:

surgical removal of the bladder. In most cases, the entire bladder is removed, however partial cystectomies have been done, although uncommonly. In relation to cancer, a cystectomy is a treatment for advanced stages of bladder cancer. In some patients with bladder cancer, bladder reconstruction surgery can be performed to allow for normal urinary function.
