Female Pattern Baldness Facts

29
It used to be that hair loss in women was a taboo subject to talk about.
If a woman had balding issues then about the only choice she had was to cover up the problem with either a head covering like a scarf or with a wig.
Very few people talked about female hair loss so not much was research was done in the treatment of the condition unlike for men.
This has now changed as women demand the same types of relief as men have enjoyed for decades.
Female pattern baldness can be caused by a variety of outside effectors.
These can include such things as hormonal changes due to child birth or normal aging, disease, certain medications and medical treatments, stress, and of course chemical hair treatments that end up doing more harm that good.
Today there are almost as high a percentage of women who suffer from hair loss as there are men but luckily there are now treatments available and women are willing to admit there is a concern.
Your best bet to get started on a treatment for balding or hair loss is to start with your primary care health professional.
They can determine what the cause is or refer you to a dermatologist or specialist who treats Alopecia (hair loss).
One of the most effective topical solutions for women is a FDA approved drug called Minoxidil.
This drug was originally developed to treat high blood pressure by causing an enlargement of the tiny blood vessels in the body.
It was thought that by making these tiny capillaries larger there would be less back pressure to the heart and the patient's blood pressure would decrease.
This result was achieved but another interesting result was also observed.
Many of the men in the study who suffered from male pattern baldness saw a decrease in hair loss and even some new hair growth.
Further studies indicated that Minoxidil did have a positive effect on the causes of pattern baldness.
If has now been found that the most effective way to treat the hair loss with this drug is to apply it as a topical solution.
That means it is applied and rubbed into the scalp at the bald area.
Women generally will use a solution that contains 2% of the active ingredient while men use a solution with 5%.
Some women find much better results with the weaker solution while others find the stronger one gives a more effective hair loss treatment.
It would be best to try both solutions and determine which is the best for you.
