- 1). Sleep with an extra pillow under your head. The extra pillow will help prevent excess fluid from building up under your eyes and creating a "baggy" look with dark circles.
- 2). Apply a cold water compress to the bottom of your eyes after waking up. This will reduce any swelling that accumulated while sleeping. Other options besides a cold water compress are chilled cucumber slices, refrigerated gel mask or cold tea bags.
- 3). Use skin creams under your eyes that contain vitamin C or K, alpha hydroxy acid or retinal. A combination of vitamin K and retinal may be especially effective. Vitamin K can shrink blood vessels, while the retinal helps re-build collagen, according to Columbia University's health web service.
- 4). Take an allergy medication if you suffer from allergies or hay fever. Nasal congestion can cause dark circles under the eyes.
- 5). Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Dehydration can create dark circles under the thin skin beneath your eyes. Properly hydrate your body and they should go away. Reduce your salt intake because an salt will dehydrate the body.
- 6). Stop smoking if you are a smoker. Smoking dehydrates the skin and destroys important vitamins in the body like Vitamin C, which rebuilds skin cells.
- 7). Eat a healthy diet that includes essential fatty acids, flaxseed oil, whole grains and fruits. Reduce or eliminate caffeine and alcohol since they dehydrate the body.
- 8). Research the option of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Eyelid surgery performed by a plastic surgeon can significantly reduce or remove dark circles and bags under your eyes, if other treatments don't work.
