Instructions for Making Mineral Makeup

73

    Ingredients & Tools

    • Gather suitable organic ingredients such as mica of various colors and titanium oxides to create lighter shades. Avoid unnatural ingredients such as talc powder if you are seeking a completely organic formula. Visit a craft supply store and pick up cosmetic containers to properly store your homemade mineral makeup, and always shop from a reliable source when purchasing cosmetic-grade mica and other natural ingredients.

Adding powdered silk to your mica powders creates a light and smooth feeling on the skin. Keep other essential tools on hand such as small wooden gram spoons, kabuki brushes, and a mortar and pestle to finely powder your ingredients.

    Additives & More

    • Gather optional additives for your mineral makeup such as iron oxide and mica glitter. Deep red-based colors come from adding iron oxide, and small amounts go a long way in making mineral makeup. Choose a variety of pearlescent mica blends to create stunning costume or evening makeup. Create a creamy mineral lip-gloss or eyeshadow by adding your choice of colored mica to a mixture of shea butter and vitamin E.

    Creation

    • Use a base recipe to guide you, but you can experiment with ingredients to create your own custom makeup recipe. Clean all tools and containers thoroughly before each use to prevent any foreign objects from getting into the makeup. Grind ingredients such as powdered silk and glitter directly with the mica to evenly distribute the minerals in the cosmetics and to prevent unattractive clumps of mica.

Making eyeshadow, blush and powdered foundation can be achieved by grinding and adding to a sealed container. Creme mineral makeup requires a little extra care but allows you to experiment with herbal infusions like chamomile, ginger and others.

    Basic Mineral Recipe

    • Spread a newspaper or disposable tablecloth on your work surface and place the following materials in front of you: 1 g forest green mica, 1/2 g of gold glitter mica, 1/2 mg titanium oxide, 1/2 oz. of refined mango butter and 1 g of emulsifying wax beads. Warm the wax and butter in a glass dish in your microwave for about 20 seconds. Grind the colored minerals and titanium oxide together using your mortar and pestle. Add the dry ingredients to the warmed butter mixture and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Let the cream dry and apply as eyeshadow for a sparkling, green evening look.
