How to Care for 50-Year-Old Skin
- 1). Cleanse twice a day, morning and night, with a gentle cleanser with a non-soap formula. Look for cleansers that are specifically targeted for mature, aging skin as these are the most moisturizing. Squirt out a dime-sized amount and massage gently into the skin. Wet a washcloth with warm water and rinse away cleanser by gently rubbing your face in a circular motion. Doing so will rinse away your cleanser and also gently exfoliate your skin.
- 2). Avoid excessive sun exposure. This can cause skin cancer and will speed up aging.
- 3). Moisturize after your morning cleanse with a rich emollient cream or a serum. Look for facial moisturizers that contain antioxidants such as Vitamin C or peptides and have UVA/UVB protection with SPF 30 or SPF 15 at a minimum. Apply all over your face while it's still damp. This is because anti-aging products react better to wet skin.
- 4). Moisturize after your nightly cleanse with a thick cream that contains retinoids, such as retinol or Retin-A. Because retinoids make your skin extra-sensitive to sun exposure, it's best to apply these at night before bed. Rub gently onto the face.
- 5). Begin visiting a dermatologist as a regular part of your routine. At this age it's important to be preventative, not only when it comes to aging, but with the health of your skin.
