North Wales James Braid Golf Trail: Old Colwyn Golf Club
Scotsman James Braid (1870-1950) was a celebrated golf course architect and five times winner of the Open Championship. Braid designed more than 250 British golf courses, with some of his best-known work being at Carnoustie and Gleneagles.
Though each of the courses Braid was involved in had their own unique features and characters, nevertheless his designs did have certain features in common. For example, the use of dog legs to encourage playing for position, and the incorporation of natural features, layouts and obstacles into the course designs.
Ten of the golf courses in North Wales were designed or redesigned by James Braid. Together they can be played as the North Wales James Braid Golf Trail, with a special certificate issued to players who have their cards stamped at all ten courses.
In this article, we look at Old Colwyn Golf Club, one of the North Wales golf courses designed by James Braid.
Old Colwyn Golf Club
Old Colwyn Golf Course is a 5243 yard, 9-hole meadowland golf course with a medal par of 68 and a 66 SSS rating. Situated in the North Wales coastal town of Colwyn Bay, Old Colwyn Golf Club is recommended by RateYourCourse, who recommend that players leave a review for the benefit of golf communities.
Old Colwyn, which opened in 1907, is regarded as the hidden gem of the North Wales Coast. The course is easily reached, just a mile from the A55 Chester to Holyhead coastal road. The course offers fantastic views of the Welsh hills, as well as a panoramic view of the Irish Sea and Colwyn Bay.
Notable holes
The course has a number of features presenting their own individual James Braid challenges.
The par 3 seventh is regarded as Old Colwyn's signature hole, where players must clear three very large oak trees guarding the front of the green.
The ninth and eighteenth finishing hole is notable as James Braid exploited and captured the views overlooking the Irish Sea and bay of Colwyn and surrounding area. On a good day, Liverpool, Blackpool and the Isle of Man can all be seen.
