Basketball Speed Training
- Core strength is key to speed in basketball. Core strength involves the muscles between the thighs and the chest, and it provides balance to the body as it changes directions. Drills that add a balance component to strength training build up the core and help the basketball player improve speed and quickness, particularly when it comes time to change directions.
- Plyometrics, or jump training, is used by basketball players to condition and strengthen the muscles involved in running and jumping. Plyometric drills include things like running through a set of tires on the ground or running in place, alternating from leg to leg in lunge position.
- You cannot get faster, even when it comes to developing basketball speed, without some running drills. Running for the sport is best done in short bursts with changes of direction involved. Line drills in which the player runs 1/4 court, then turns and runs back, then extends to 1/2, 3/4 and then full court is a common speed and agility drill. Simply running stairs in the gym or stadium is another alternative for working the speed muscles.
