The Three Basic Rules of Skin Care
When it comes to keeping my skin looking its best, there are three basic rules that I follow - cleansing, moisturizing and toning.
Cleansing is the first rule and arguably the most important.
Cleansing lays the foundation for the other two basic rules.
Cleansing removes dead, damaged skin cells from your skin as well as dirt and other toxins that gather on your skin during the course of the day.
Cleansing also opens up the pores of your skin and allows your body's natural oils to permeate the layers of your skin and bring nutrients to the surface.
These nutrients are crucial in maintaining healthy skin as they help fight toxins and protect against infection.
These natural oils in your skin also contribute to a healthy, vibrant glow! Make sure you use an actual skin cleanser, rather than just regular soap.
Soaps have high pH content that can cause damage to the especially sensitive skin on your face and lead to dryness, which gives you a much older appearance.
Instead, seek out cleansers that contain stearic acid or vegetable oil, which are more gentle on your skin and safe for any skin type.
Additionally, a facial scrub is a good cleansing method, though a bit harsher on the skin, and thus should be limited to only two or three times a week.
The second basic rule, moisturizing, is also very important.
Your body is mostly made up of water, and water moves through your body and circulates through your skin cells from the inside-out.
When your body is dehydrated, it shows in your skin which becomes dry and flaky.
This is why it is so important to keep hydrated at all times (it is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day).
However, as it important it is to keep your body hydrated from the inside, it is not always enough, and you need to take measures to moisturize externally.
Applying moisturizer to the skin replenishes your skin with moisture and acts as a barrier from your skin cells from drying it so easily.
The last basic rule, toning, can be done before or after moisturizing.
While cleansing your skin helps rid your cells of dirt and other waste, it also can take away your skin's natural oils that are healthy for your skin.
Applying a skin toner after cleansing assists in closing up the pores so it is more difficult for toxins to re-enter.
Be sure to steer clear of toners that contain alcohol as it tends to slow down collagen production and lead to dry, flaky skin, which makes you look older than your age.
Taking care of your skin doesn't have to be a stressful undertaking as long as you follow these three basic rules.
Here's to always looking our best!
