Acne Remedies - Do Any Really Work?

48
Due to the large number of acne sufferers, one should not be surprised to know that there are many old wives tales about, regarding cures for acne, as well as many varied and conflicting treatments available on the retail market. Some of the most commonly accepted acne treatments may be summarised and categorised as follows:

Creams and ointments:

Creams and ointments for the treatment of acne tend to be sulphur based. Although it may sound strange, but sulphur has a softening effect on skin and also aids in the removal of hard dead skin cells and thus helps prevent acne from forming. These sulphur based creams are moderately effective for those who only suffer the occasional mild case of acne, but not for someone who suffers from acute acne. These creams can also have some side effects such as burning of the skin, and skin discoloration. Also, in some cases, sulphur has been known to increase cell adhesion, thus causing a fresh acne outbreak.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are designed to kill bacterial infections, and are often very effective. In extreme or acute cases of acne, dermatologists or doctors will prescribe a course of antibiotics such as minocyline, tetracycline or erythromycin. Antibiotics may be effective in curing the outbreak of acne, however they are unable to prevent the acne from forming in the first place. It is thus common to see a recurrence of acne once the use of the antibiotic is discontinued.

Hygiene

•Mild soap and water.

Many people believe that acne is caused by poor hygiene. However, this is incorrect. Using soap and water will not cure acne, but in fact, by over scrubbing, can cause the condition to become worse. It is necessary to keep the skin clean to keep the skin healthy and unaffected.

•Over the counter scrubs and cleansers

The idea behind acne scrubs is that the abrasive materials contained within will help remove the dead cells, and thus prevent the blocking of the pores. However, as with soap and water, using an over-abrasive scrub can cause the condition to worsen. Cleansers are used to remove dirt and excess sebum from the skin. Most commercial products have a tendency to dry out the skin more than is considered healthy as they contain salicylic acid, with the possible combination of benzoyl peroxide.

• Hydrogen Peroxide
Recently, hydrogen peroxide has been called a "miracle cure" for acne, with the fact that it is cheap and easy to procure from the pharmacy making it an attractive option for many acne sufferers. Being a powerful anti-bacterial, hydrogen peroxide kills most bacteria on contact. Again, as with other treatments, while hydrogen peroxide can be effective at treating existing spots, it does not prevent the initial formation of acne.

• Vitamin Supplements
It is undeniable that vitamin supplements can have a positive effect on acne. However, it is highly unlikely that they will cure your acne. Vitamins are often used as part of holistic acne remedies and, if they are used properly can be effective. Some commonly recommended supplements are:

1.Vitamin A, which is considered essential for the skin to heal itself.

2.Zinc, which aids in tissue restoration and helps prevent scarring. It also assists the body in fighting inflammation and infection.

3.Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. They also help keep cell walls healthy and are needed in the delivery of nutrients to the cells.
