The Healing Benefits of Auricular Acupuncture

What is Auricular Acupuncture?

Auricular acupuncture is known by many names including auriculotherapy, auricular therapy or simply ear acupuncture. The modern practice was developed by Paul Nogier, a French neurologist, in the 1950s. This makes it a very new technique, although it borrows a great deal from the ancient Chinese practice of traditional acupuncture. It is essentially a unique merging of Eastern and Western medicinal practices.

The ears have been acknowledged as acupoints in Chinese medicine for thousands of years, but the fundamental principle of auricular acupuncture that separates it from other types of needling therapy is the assertion that a person's ear is actually a complex microsystem that reflects their entire body. Because of this, working with the ears alone can treat basically any condition and relieve symptoms all over the body. In all types of holistic medicine, every part of the body is interconnected and acupoints correspond to different organs and are associated with different ailments.

Like all other types of acupuncture, ear acupuncture is a form of reflexology. The ears have been carefully mapped with a series of acupoints. There are over 200 acupoints on your ear and these ear acupoints work in basically the same ways as the acupoints and meridians on other parts of the body. Auricular acupuncture practitioners work exclusively with the external ear using needles and sometimes electrical stimulation as well. Manual stimulation of the acupoints on the ear is usually referred to as ear acupressure. Auricular acupuncture can treat everything from pain to poor circulation. It also promotes healing and can give your immune system a boost to prevent you from getting sick in the first place.

What Conditions Does Auricular Acupuncture Treat?

Every part of the body is linked to a point on the ear by an elaborate series of nerves. Stimulating the acupoints on the ear has many of the same effects and health benefits as stimulating the other acupoints on the body. It is most often used to treat many different degrees of pain, including chronic pain and even migraine headaches. It is more effective than traditional acupuncture when it comes to treating acute pain. Muscle and joint pain from injuries and joint pain caused by arthritis can be treated by working the ear too. Auricular acupuncture speeds the healing process for a variety of injuries as well. The technique serves to increase blood flow and circulation, repairing damaged tissue rapidly and also helping to combat infections.

Ear acupuncture is also sometimes employed to help with detoxing from addictive drugs. Specific ear stimulation can ward off cravings of all sorts and even help with other compulsions that are psychological in nature. It has shown a great deal of promise in weight loss and helping with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well. Other points on the ear can lead to states of relaxation and general stress relief. In cases of severe stress, auricular acupuncture is more effective than traditional acupuncture. It gives you an instant and more prolonged sense of calmness, promoting emotional well-being as well as physical well-being.

How Ear Acupuncture Works

Auricular acupuncture can provide you with both physical as well as mental healing benefits. Even if you aren't suffering from any particular condition or ailment a session can leave you feeling rejuvenated, energized and more balanced.

Stimulating the ear with needling at the correct locations causes unique chain reactions. The first stage of the reaction is in the brain. Neurons are activated which then send information to other parts of the body. Some points on the ear also trigger the release of endorphins which improve your mood. These different reactions can do everything from resetting irritated nerves causing pain and muscles spasms to improving circulation to certain areas of the body. The body benefits greatly from these occasional resets and boosts. Without resets, various imbalances begin to occur. This can cause pain as well as emotional stress and anxiety. Adding auricular acupuncture sessions to a health regimen is highly beneficial for many people.
