How to Make a Model of the Eye
- 1). Make the filler and holder for your eye model. Round enough aluminum foil to create an eye shape about three inches across. Cut the dowel rod to five inches, or the length you want for your eye's resting height. Insert the dowel rod in the bottom of the foil ball.
- 2). Wrap the eye shape in white clay. Cut half the block of clay and roll flat with the roller. Flatten the clay to about a half inch. Cut the clay into two pieces, one twice the size of the other. Place the center of the large flat clay piece on the front of the eye and wrap around the aluminum foil ball. Center the small piece on the back and warp around to touch the front piece. Trim excess clay with the cutting tool, and connect together.
In your hands, lightly shape into a good eye shape. Fill in any holes or shallow areas with small clay pieces, and smooth. - 3). Shape a round iris in your favorite color. Use the roller to flatten your iris clay. Cut out a circle with a two-inch diameter. Place the iris on the center front of the eyeball.
- 4). Mold a black pupil. Cut a small piece from the black clay. Round into a ball. Flatten the clay with your hand, and then roll even. Trim out a pupil approximatley a half inch in diameter. Secure the pupil in the center of the iris. For iris texture, make lines with a clay tool.
- 5). Fashion the optic nerve and attach to the back of the eye. Roll a yellow clay cylinder. Roll a small piece of yellow clay into a tube about one-fourth inch wide and three-fourths inches long.
Roll a sheet of red clay three-fourths inches high. Wrap the yellow tube and smooth. Make a one-fourth inch long tube in white clay. Attach to red tube's front end. At the white end, attach the nerve to the back of the eye.
Roll thin blue and red clay cords about a half inch long. Make four of each color. Place arteries and nerves on eye back connected to the optic nerve. - 6). Add eye muscles. Make four flat 1.5-inch square red clay pieces. Place one on top and one on bottom, leaving a holder hole. Make side muscles by placing one red square on each side. Secure the pieces in place and use clay tool to texture each with muscle striations.
- 7). Paint arteries on front of eyeball. With the paint brush, paint red artery lines on front of eyeball near the eye muscles.
- 8). Bake the eye in an oven. Remove the eye from the holder. Set eye on a nest of fiberfill. Place on baking tray and bake according to the clay package instructions.
- 9). Paint the base and holder. Drill a hole for the holder. Set holder in the hole. Paint both black.
