What Is Gum Base?
- Elastomers are the ingredients that give gum its bounce and elasticity. Bubble gum contains more elastomers than regular gum. A higher elastomer content allows the bubble gum to stretch.
- Resin and wax give gum its body and keep it soft. These ingredients allow the gum to keep its shape without disappearing as you chew it.
- Gum base itself does not have any flavor. Look at the ingredients list on your pack of gum to see what has been added to give the gum its distinctive taste: glucose (sugar), glucose syrup and polyols. For sugar-free varieties, intensive sweeteners are important flavoring components.
- Gum base comes in five different forms: slabs, sheets, pellets, pearls and drops. Each manufacturer determines which base is best for its product. The ingredients are melted together and then filtered until the base has reached the desired consistency.
