Surrender to Win
Surrender means different things to different people.
Those with a military background think of this word as something to fight against.
Surrender would be the last course of action only to be used if death was the only other alternative.
The next course of action in this scenario would be to escape and reclaim freedom; to be back in control.
This is so important that an oath is taken to guard against giving up and protecting their freedom.
Surrender in the spiritual realm is the complete opposite of the above description.
Freedom comes only after surrender.
Where the above paragraph looks at physical imprisonment this paragraph is more concerned with the spirit or soul.
In order to be truly free we must abandon all the entrapments that come with being in control of ones own life or of the lives of those around us.
When we look at relationships we are looking at the illusion of control and everything in life is a relationship.
People who use drugs think they are in control of the drug until they find themselves in a drug rehab.
People with a chronic illness want to bargain to regain control of their life.
Total freedom comes from totally giving up.
When we have nothing left to lose and give up ownership then we are free of the fear of having something taken.
There is very little if anything that we can claim as our own.
The trick in surrendering is the relationship we have with that which we surrender too.
When someone leaves a treatment program they have in most cases been introduced to a "higher Power" and it is up to them to develop that relationship.
The degree that we develop the relationship is in directly related to our ability to surrender.
When we lose someone we love our feelings surrounding that lost have to do with how much love we were willing to give to the person.
To move forward we embrace the love freely given and surrender that which we never owned.
