Dealbreaker: Acne Can Hamper Your Job Interview and Other Important Face-to-Face Interactions

A recent article by CBS's MoneyWatch claims that acne can harm your chances of landing a job. According to a recent study conducted by researchers at Rice University and the University of Houston, mock interviews of people both with and without acne showed that interviewers were distracted by uncommon facial characteristics, acne being one of them. If ever there was an argument for the necessity of acne treatment, especially in image-conscious areas such as Orange County, CA this study proves that acne is more than just a minor annoyance.

According to one of the researchers, "When looking at another person during a conversation, your attention is naturally directed in a triangular pattern around the eyes and mouth... We tracked the amount of attention outside of this region and found that the more the interviewers attended to stigmatized features on the face, the less they remembered about the candidate's interview content, and the less memory they had about the content led to decreases in ratings of the applicant."

While researchers concede that this is not conscious discrimination on the part of the interviewers, it is, rather, a flaw of human nature that appearance sometimes overshadows other qualities that should be more important.

Acne sufferers often feel self-conscious, so it has been difficult to discern whether such discrimination is perceived or real. Similar studies have been conducted based on weight, gender, and race, all with similar results that indicate the perception of bias is not only real but proven.

Fortunately, there are effective acne treatments that can eliminate this scenario from existence. Though many people shop pharmacy shelves in search of a cure, consulting with a dermatologist is actually the faster and more effective way to get from point "a" to point "b" in eradicating acne.

Acne often manifests in teenage years, clearing significantly if not completely during the twenties. However, there are other forms of acne that appear at other stages in life. Women, in particular, struggle with longer lasting forms of acne, often attributed to hormones. And genetics also influence acne. Almost 90% of people will endure acne at some point in their lifetime, and consequently, there are numerous products on the market that play to their vulnerability when looking for a fast fix. But acne is a bit more complicated than what spot treatments and so-called miracle cures can manage.

When seeking acne treatment from an Orange County dermatologist, oral and topical antibiotics are often prescribed and, as with any other form of antibiotic, they generally take some time to have the necessary systemic effect. But whether you're waiting for an antibiotic to kick in or scrambling blindly through the maze of over-the-counter options, at least the light at the end of the tunnel with dermatologist-guided acne treatment is that the problem will be appropriately identified, treated, and resolved.

If acne is having a negative impact on your life and on your self-esteem, take heart, and beat a path to your nearest Orange County dermatologist's door for acne treatment that will actually work. Your livelihood, apparently, could depend on it.
