One of the foremost human motives, one that basically determines the other motives in the human hierarchy of needs is survival linked with security. Sense of security can only be acquired through complete knowledge of self defense and personal safety. Broadly Personal safety and self defense can be characterized as seven components which are stated below:

1. Survival Psychology

The motive to feel safe and secure is ingrained in us. Psychologists say that the fear of violence between people is considered to be a "universal human phobia”.

Survival psychology covers three broad areas:
  • Management and understanding of fear.
  • Study and training leading to self motivation regarding one’s own personal safety
  • Understanding the impact of self esteem on emotional resilience, crisis performance and victim selection.

2. Survival Intelligence

The brain being the control center of all human decisions and actions it is prudent to understand that it is the most powerful weapon in the human body. Survival Intelligence is the promotion of knowledge, intuition, awareness and assessment skills. Picking on certain pre – incident cues and signs and knowing respond to them is crucial for successful self defense.

3. Understanding Victim Selection

In an experiment determining vulnerability to criminal behavior Psychologists showed a videotape to some prisoners which showed several people going about their daily activities. The job of the inmates was to indicate which of the people on the tape they would select as their targets. The results showed common traits unique to those who were selected and those who were not. This proves that not everyone becomes the victim of a violent crime. It should be understood first of all that there is a selection process through which the attackers selects his victim. People who are trained in self defense are hardly ever attacked. Their movement, posture, skills etc. sends some unconscious signals to a predator that they are not an easy target.  Hence you are sending signals to the predator that will be interpreted to determine your vulnerability to an attack, simply put the more confident you are in your self defense abilities the more less likely it becomes that you will have to use them.
  1. Recognizing Predatory Behavior

The fact remains that how do you know who is the person you are to be aware of and not let your gurad down in front of? These people certainly don’t walk around parading the fact that they will attack you and harm you so are there any markings or signs that separate these people from the rest? Sadly: no. There are no unique physical traits that separate people who victimize others from those who don't. They all look similar, but behavior is different. There are two types of attackers to be aware of. One is who deliberately locates a victim and then attacks, and the other is ticking time bomb. The latter is emotionally unstable and prone to violent eruptions. Unlike the predator who is more careful in his approach, the latter is like a ticking time bomb, and can spontaneously indulge in some meaningless violence for reasons that are understood solely by him.
  1. Response Option Theory

While we are within our legal right to defend ourselves however When learning a response system, you must consider the legal consequences of your actions.

There are 5 categories of response options relevant to confrontational situations:
  • Compliance
  • Escape
  • De-escalation
  • Assertiveness
  • Fighting Back

The circumstances and nature of the confrontation determine the response that should be properly elicited.
  1. Prevention Tips

Precautionary steps you can take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Understanding the functioning principles behind these tips, you can manage safety tactics. Those tips should be adopted with which you feel comfortable and which are helpful to your lifestyle. They would in the long run protect you from something very horrible and gruesome.
  1. Training Methods

All training methods and exercises will go to waste if review and practice is not consistent and punctual, skills learned through a self defense class would be forgotten. There are many benefits of studying and practicing self defense, such as reducing the chances of being attacked.
