How to Use Honey to Sweeten Foods
- 1). Substitute honey for sugar in your favorite recipes. The amount of honey you use can depend on your preferences, according to the Pick Your Own website. If you want the recipe sweeter, swap out the sugar and use equal measurements of honey. For a less sweet taste, reduce the amount of honey to 3/4 cup for every cup of sugar.
- 2). Reduce any liquids in the recipe by 1/4 cup, since the liquid honey will increase the amount of overall liquid in the recipe.
- 3). Add 1/8 tsp. of baking soda to baking recipes to provide the recipe with the appropriate amount of acidity. Bake the dishes 25 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the recipe indicates to prevent the honey from burning.
- 4). Replace sugar with honey in your canning and pickling recipes. Instead of 1 cup of sugar, use 3/4 cup of honey to mix with fruit to create jams and jellies or to preserve fruits and vegetables with pickling.
- 5). Sweeten tea or coffee with a teaspoon of honey, instead of sugar. Squeeze a small amount of honey into the mug, and then pour in coffee or tea and stir. Also try using honey on biscuits instead of butter or margarine.
