What"s the Secret to Your Success? Part 5

43
Thank God the road to success is hard road covered by blood, sweat, and tears.
Does that sound strange to you? Think about this for a moment...
if it looked like something from the game "Candyland" everyone would be on the same road.
How would you know if you were really creating, or doing something special? I discussed the "Fear of Failure" with you last time, and how you could practice "Humility" to work towards overcoming it.
Today I want to share with you how you can start becoming what you want to become.
I have based a tremendous amount of these ideas on success from the book "The Pledge" by Michael Masterson.
In the book Masterson talks about "Talking" about becoming a writer.
Unfortunately, as his father pointed out, talking about something does not help you become that something.
The only way to become what you want to become is "To Do" what you want to become.
Masterson gives the example of wanting to become a writer.
His father's wisdom was simple, start writing.
Bam! Suddenly he became a writer.
Holy Simple Batman! Can it really be that easy? Why Not? Since the core of what I do is help grow small businesses, let's use the example of becoming a business owner.
The Latin term for this is "Entreprenuerius Maximus.
" Because of what I do in life, many people share with me that they would like to be their own boss.
The glamorous life of calling the shots, making big money, letting other people do all the work, and of course the fancy car.
I know, I can hear the laughter rolling out from the business owners, entrepreneurs, and other self-employed people.
You've seen the statistics, about 80% fail within the first 5-years, or whatever the number is now.
If you do survive, many have merely created a stressful job, not a business.
Enough with the depressing statistics.
If you want to become a business owner, what must you do? Well if it's me you're talking with I would ask you something like, "What do you want to do?" The next thing I would say to you is, "Now Git'er dun.
" You may want to over think things, but my suggestion is as simple as pop-up a quick word press website, set-up an email, and then start figuring out how to sell your product or service.
This may seem like radically simple advice and probably goes against everything you've been told, or heard from other people about starting a business.
In this country of free choice you're free to listen to whoever you want.
I like action, and my first instinct is to take action.
Nothing happens until you take action.
Be proactive.
By taking the first step of creating a quick website what are you becoming? A Business owner, that's right, you're so cool! You can now back into your goal of becoming a business owner.
You want your goal to be realistic and bound to a time frame.
So for your example of starting a business, decide on a realistic sales goal.
You say $12,000 in your first year is your sales goal.
Now break that into monthly objectives of $1,000 per month.
To keep the math easy you can then make weekly objectives of $250.
This is an example of how you can chunk your goal down into monthly, and weekly objectives.
Now you have to decide what are the actions you need to take each day to achieve your sales objectives, let's call them daily tasks.
You should start out with something realistic, such as maybe talk with 3 people per day about doing business with you.
Let's pretend for a minute you close 1 out 3 people each time you perform this task.
If your product sells for $125 you can do the math to see how many sales you need to achieve your goals.
Now this is not an article on sales, but you can see from the example how you can take some action on creating a simple plan of action to achieve your goal.
I want you to see how these actions led you into becoming what you want to become.
By doing, you're becoming.
By becoming you're achieving your goals, and let me tell you my friend, nothing feels as good as achieving your goals.
To wrap this up, I'm going to ask you do two things.
1.
Write down what you want to become, and then take a first step towards action on what you write down.
2.
Write down how you will feel when you achieve what you want to become.
