In this article you will learn about different types of red wine along with some general wine basics.
In case you are a newbie and would like to learn more about red wines, this is the place to begin.
Whether it is a powerful and focused Bordeaux or a rich and earthy Burgundy, enjoying the many types of red wine is a palpable experience that begins with a sip and can last an entire lifetime.
Although the different types of red wine varies by the region in which the grapes were grown, how the wine was made, and how the wine was aged and stored, the natural starting point for any introduction to wine is to get familiar with the grapes themselves.
Although there are dozens of different types of red wine grapes, or varietals, grown at vineyards around the world, there are four that are essential to the modern wine market: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Merlot.
Each of these four grape varietals have their own distinct flavors and personalities that provide the basic set of traits that a wine maker has to work with.
Cabernet Sauvignon grapes invariably create a rich and powerful wine that can stand up very flavorful foods.
Syrah, also known as Shriraz, is another powerful grape that can be quite dry and is often blended with other grape varietals.
Pinot Noir, on the other hand, is a very sensitive grape that tastes much more luscious, delicate and earthy.
Merlot is a soft and friendly grape that creates a fruity tasting wine that is very easy to drink and particularly popular amongst consumers who do not particularly care for the stronger flavors of wine.
