How to Be Emotionally Strong on the Inside

    • 1). Make the decision to become emotionally strong and set a date to meet your goal. Write this date down on the calendar or make a sign to hang on your bathroom mirror. Having a definitive goal in place can help you begin making steps to becoming emotionally stronger.

    • 2). Write down what aspects you need to change in your life in order to achieve emotional strength, or write down the characteristics of a person who you believe is emotionally strong and that you admire. Set these goals for yourself to achieve emotional strength in your own life. For example, if a person you admire always speaks her mind in a respectful manner, this is a goal you can set for yourself.

    • 3). Start changing any damaging thoughts you have that interfere with obtaining emotional strength. Damaging thoughts would be any thoughts that put you down or make you feel uncertain about yourself and your abilities, such as "I can't handle this stress" or "Everyone is out to get me." Avoiding negative thoughts is the first step to gaining emotional strength.

    • 4). Step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. This will be uncomfortable at first, but in order to prove to yourself you are capable of emotional strength, you need to grow and expand your horizons. Instead of sitting by quietly when someone says something you don't like, speak up and respectfully give your opinion. You might be surprised at how good this can make you feel and boost your confidence about your emotional strength.

    • 5). Take it slow and expect minimal progress or even setbacks at first. However, the more you practice your goals and make efforts to change your thoughts, the more progress and change you will see.
