Traditional Korean Drinks

25

    Soju

    • Soju is the most famous and iconic drink in Korea. Soju is a hard, vodka-like liquid usually made out or rice; it has a strong odor and taste. Since it is very cheap compared to beer or wine (less than US $1.00), soju always appears at any meal or social gathering. Soju found in stores across the country has an alcohol content of 11 percent, though the special Andong Soju contains 40 percent alcohol.

    Makkoli

    • Makkoli is made from fermented rice and boiled water. It is milky white in color and is served in a large bowl. Instead of drinking it in a glass, makkoli is drunk from a smaller bowl. Makkoli contains approximately 6 to 7 percent alcohol and is usually consumed along with a traditional Korean pancake called pajeon.

    Dong Dong Ju

    • Dong Dong Ju is similar to makkoli in that it is made from fermented rice; however, it differs in that the drink contains bits of rice within the drink (dong dong is Korean for "floating"). Usually consumed with kimchi pajeon, Dong Dong Ju is a popular rainy day drink in Korea.

    Baek Se Ju

    • Baek Se Ju is a strong flavored alcohol made from rice. Although considered a wine, Baek Se Ju shares nothing in common with the Western grape wine. The yellow drink is infused with many herbs, including ginseng and ginger and it is believed that you will live to 100 if you drink this regularly--the name itself can be translated as "100 year wine". Baek Se Ju is commonly referred to as the elite soju as its price tag is considerably higher.

    Maeshil Ju

    • Maeshil ju is a traditional green plum wine that has a sweet taste with a hint of bitter. Although green plum wines are popular in China and Japan, the Korean version of the drink has a much different flavor thanks to the use of brown sugar in equal parts as plums. Maeshil ju contains approximately the same amount of alcohol as traditional grape wines of the West.
