When someone is sick or is suffering from a condition, the first words or picture that comes into our minds is probably the hospital, a doctor or medicine. This goes the same for people who are diagnosed with ADHD. Of course, we think there is something wrong with them and that the doctors can do something about it, right? And what do you think, aside from their knowledge on the condition, is something that we would expect from a doctor? For that I would say, their knowledge on how to treat the condition. And one of their weapons, if I may say, is medicine.

Medicine is a substance used to treat, prevent or enhance our mental and/or physical well-being. Through the years, a lot of medicines have been discovered that will treat a number of diseases. One of these medicines includes the stimulants. These are not exactly a new discovery in the field of medicine but it is widely used in the 1950s. Nowadays, it is gaining its popularity for controlling or managing the symptoms of a condition such as ADHD. Given that ADHD is characterized by hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity, stimulants are able to benefit the patients in terms of reducing restlessness, and increase productivity of people with ADHD in their environment. However, as we all know, these medicines have side effects. Because of these, many parents are hesitant in the pharmacotherapy as the approach that they will have their children to undergo. Thus, they are looking for alternative treatment approaches.

One of the safe treatment approach that there is, is the use of herbal medicines. Herbal medicines were first used and studied by Sumerians 5000 years ago. Now, there are still existing herbal medicines in the market made from plant or plant extracts that are made mostly the by Chinese. Some of the herbal medicines that can be an alternative to drugs are Ginkgo biloba and green oats. Green oats, for an instance almost has the same effects as caffeine which is also known to be an alternative to the store-bought stimulants. In fact, there are a number of herbal medicines available that have stimulating effects to the brain and may result to almost the same positive effects of stimulants like Ritalin. Another benefit of these herbal medicines is the fact that they do not have side effects unlike the stimulants.

Having known these, you may also include herbal medicines as one of your options in treating ADHD. For further information, you may research for a particular herb that you think best suits you. You can also ask your doctor about these herbal medicines to get a view from a professional before trying such medicines. As they say, there is no harm like trying the ADHD herbal treatment.
