Slurp Embraces the Austrian Wine Revolution

63
Today Slurp.co.uk, the UK's fastest growing online wine retailer, announced a major expansion in its Austrian wine portfolio. Almost 120 new Austrian wines have joined our range and are available for purchase from today. These come almost exclusively from small producers, making non-factory farmed wines of genuine quality and distinction.

We are thrilled because Austria is the centre of much exciting activity at the moment, much of which matches the Slurp philosophy perfectly. A number of young winemakers have established or taken over operations in the last decade and they are now pushing the boundaries of quality, integrity and experimentation.

Gerhard Pittnauer Pinot Noir Fuchsenfeld 2006Gerhard and Brigitte Pittnauer typify what is going on. In 1998 their wine was lodged in a small cellar under the family house in Gols! But since the new winery was built in 2001, their domaine has expanded from 6 hectares to 22 - with an impressive range of new wines. Other exciting young winemakers who have burst onto the international scene in the last decade include Michael Moosbrugger at Schloss Gobelsburg in Kamptal and Rainer Wess in Unterloiben (Wachau region). The rejuvenation of the Weingut Stadt Krems estate in the last few years has been similarly dramatic. And Roland Velich is setting new standards for quality since establishing his own operation at Weingut Moric in Burgenland.

The investment in time and effort is starting to pay off in terms of international recognition. We are delighted to offer, for instance, Roland Velich's Moric Blaufrnkisch Neckenmarkter Alte Reben 2006 - which recently received 95 points from US wine critic Robert Parker, one of the highest scores ever awarded to an Austrian wine. Of course Austria continues to be known predominantly for its white wines - and Grner Veltliner and Riesling are well represented amongst our new additions. But the country now produces a wide variety of stunning reds. Pinot Noir is widely planted widely, but so too are less well know red varietals (at least in the UK) such as Blaufrnkisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt. We are delighted to be able to offer a good selection of these.

Of interest to many Slurpers will be the range of 'sweeties' - many available in accessible and affordable half bottles. Late harvested and botrytized beerenauslese and trockenbeerenauslese wines are being made from a large variety of grapes in Austria now, including the obvious candidates Riesling and Grner Veltliner, but also Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Welschriesling and Sauvignon Blanc. Check out the 'collection' from Helmut Lang if you really want to make your mouth water!

So we welcome our new Austrian friends to the Slurp fold and hope that you will be as excited about this new range as we are.
