Cellulite - Facts About This Condition

28
Cellulite has been associated with obesity. According to experts, this condition is not a direct function of excess weight. It is a genetic difference on how the connective tissue and adipose tissue form. Hence, it affects a person whether obese or not.

The adipose tissue also known as fatty tissue is formed in compartments similar to honeycomb. Because the connective tissue underneath your skin has irregular patterns and the fatty tissues are pushed into the skin, lumps appear.

Nobody likes the appearance of orange-like, cottage skin. Everybody wants a smooth, evenly toned skin.
What Are the Treatments

Various treatments have been advertised to treat and eliminate the lumpy appearance on your skin. But none of these claims have scientific evidence.

Methylxanthines are made up of caffeine, theophylline and aminophylline. They are commonly used in creams for treating this condition. These chemicals are known to be effective in breaking down fat stores.

Dietary supplements also claim to be effective in reducing the appearance of cellulite. They claim to boost metabolism, protect against cell damage, improve circulation and break down fats. Because these products are classified as dietary supplements and not as drugs, the FDA has no jurisdiction over them. These products are not required to comply with the scientific standards for safety and effectiveness as applied to drugs. The use of these supplements is not supported by any clinical studies.

Massage treatments such as Endermologie is one of the treatments available for the reduction of dimples on the skin. This is an electronic device that squeezes, pulls and suctions the areas that are affected. It is effective in reducing the appearance of lumpy skin but the results are not seen after several treatments. It appears that Endermologie redistributes fat instead of permanently altering the fat configuration under the skin. This is why regular maintenance is required to prevent the lumpy skin from re-appearing.

Laser or light therapy is also used for the temporary reduction of the lumpy appearance on your skin. It requires multiple sessions before you get desirable results and maintenance is also required.

Mesotherapy is the most controversial treatment for this condition. Usually, FDA approved medications are used together with other herbs and vitamins and injected to the body. The catch is, this FDA approved medications are approved for other conditions and not for this specific condition. The safety and efficacy of the substances being injected to treat cellulite has not been evaluated thoroughly.
